The fight, scheduled for eight rounds, is a chance for fight fans to whet their appetites for fisticuffs before local hero Juan Diaz, 26-0 (12 KOs), defends his WBA lightweight title against Billy Irwin, 42-5 (30 KOs) the following day at the Reliant Center.
A vicious power puncher, Shields has won over a hoard of fans, many of whom show up clad in White Tiger attire, with his exciting take-no-prisoners style since making his pro debut two years ago. All but one of his bouts have been fought in the Browning Boxing ring. Shields, 15-0 (9KOs), won the state title against Marcus Wood a year ago and has successfully defended it twice. Against Vela, 9-5-2 (6 KOs), he ventures into unfamiliar waters of fighting a southpaw.
The event will also feature a trio of former amateur standouts. Former National Golden Gloves heavyweight champion and American Football League defensive end Travis Walker, 6-0 (5 KOs) will face Michael Hamilton of Huntsville. Light heavyweight Chris Henry, a former Ringside International champion, will make his pro debut against Ricky Foret. Conroe light welterweight Mario Perez, 1-0 (1 KO), will take on Felix Blanco, 0-1, of Tyler.
Gates open at 6:30 PM and the first bout will start at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $50 for ringside. Tickets can be purchased by calling Browning Boxing at 713-426-5400 or at www.browningboxing.com
