Chauncy "The Hillyard Hammer" Welliver Retains WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title

By Charles C. White - Saturday night, July 24th, WBO top 10 heavyweight contender Chauncy Welliver successfully defended his newly acquired WBC Continental Americas title with a shutout unanimous decision victory over Joell Godfrey (9-3-1 with 5 ko's at the time) at The Pagent in Saint Louis, Missouri as the co-feature to the Deandre Latimore vs. Darien Ford fight. Scores for the bout all favored Welliver at 115-113 and 117-111 twice. Joell Godfrey, a contestant on Season 4 of the hit boxing reality show The Contender, was a late replacement opponent for Chauncy. Welliver was originally scheduled to face Galen "Bad Boy" Brown (33-14-1 with 20 ko's), but Brown had to pull out of the fight with an injury suffered in training camp..

Throughout the fight, Welliver displayed his superior boxing skills to out-hustle and out-work the challenger. Chauncy fought hard behind a cross-armed defense and utilized effective body shots to trouble his opponent. Welliver's unorthodox style proved too slick for Godfrey to sustain an attack for any length of time. Post-fight, Chauncy was very humble and respectful towards Godfrey, even giving props to the challenger's skill set. With this win, Welliver improves to 43-5-5 with 14 ko's, whereas Godfrey drops to 9-4-1 with 5 ko's.
