Chad Dawson Interview

10.26.04 - By Ron DiMichele: WBC Youth Middleweight Champion Bad Chad Dawson(15-0, 10 KOs) of Hartford, CT will roll the dice Friday night, Oct. 29th in a battle of unbeatens whenhe faces Darnell Wilson (8-0-1, 6 KOs) of Lafayette,IN at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket,CT. Dawson sat down with Eastside at his training site in Windsor, CT and shared his thoughts about himself, his boxing career, and the upcoming bout.

RD: How long do you see yourself continuing to fight as a middleweight?

Chad Dawson: I cant really answer that question. Im still young and my bodys still growing. Im going to try to make 160 as long as I can. But if I cant, Ill have to give it up.

RD: Do you excel at any sports besides boxing?

Chad Dawson: Yes, I played basketball and football in high school.

RD: What position did you play in football?

Chad Dawson: Receiver and quarterback.

RD: Is it important to you to be recognized as the best middleweight in New England or is your focus more on the world rankings?

Chad Dawson: Im more focused on the world rankings. Being recognized as the top middleweight in New England is a big privilege to have, but I dont really think about that. I think about being ranked in the WBC, being known worldwide. Being known in New England is a big thing, but Id rather be known worldwide.

RD: Do you believe youre the best middleweight in New England?

Chad Dawson: Yes I do.

RD: Is a New England middleweight showdown between yourself and Ian Gardner still a possibility?

Yes, thats a possibility. Thats something I really want to happen. I heard theres a lot of chat going back and forth, but thats beside the point. When we get in the ring, my hands will settle it all. Honestly, I think Ill stop him.

RD: What does the WBC Youth Middleweight Title mean to you?

Chad Dawson: It means a lot to me that I got it, but its a stepping stone to me. You can only hold that belt up until the age of twenty-three.

RD: What aspects of your game will you be working on against Darnell Wilson?

Chad Dawson: Weve been working on my jab and trying to improve on the jab. I never knew I had a good jab, [But lately] Ive been hitting people with the jab and hurting them with it. So, thats definitely going to play a role in the fight. And a lot of movement. My goal is to fight the fight in the middle of the ring. Im going to box. Im going to give him a boxing lesson. I dont want to go in and just fight. I want to hit and dont get hit. I want to win every round.

RD: What does the Darnell Wilson fight mean in terms of furthering your boxing career?

Chad Dawson: They say he was an Olympic alternate to David Reid and obviously he can fight. A win would be good, a knockout would be even better. Hes 8 and 0 with 6 knockouts. Im 15 and 0 with 10 knockouts. I meanit should be a good fight. Itll be a good stepping stone.

RD: When you watch, say, a Jermain Taylor, do you have a tendency to visualizeHow would I fight this guy?

Chad Dawson: All the time. Every time I watch a fight. I may have seen him fight three or four times and every time I picture me in front of him. What would I do to beat him? A couple more years experience, maybe another years experience, and I think Ill be ready for him. Ill be physically stronger and mentally stronger. I think Ill be ready for him.

RD: Are there any fighters who you have particularly admired in your life?

Chad Dawson: In my life? The only guy I can say I looked up to is my father. He was a good professional fighter. He didnt have the opportunities that I had. When he would fight, he came in as the underdog. But my father, he was the guy who really taught me how to box. I went to the gym when I was ten and up until that time my father was the one who trained me. So I looked at my father as the guy I really wanted to be. He trained me. He was always there. Hes at all my fights; hes in the corner. If I had to say somebody [else], I would say Marvin Hagler or Tommy Hearns.

RD: What do you love most about boxing?

Chad Dawson: Being in shape. Thats the fun part to me. After a fight, you go home, youre in shape! You feel good. You go and see your friends, there are guys out of shape, but youre in shape. Thats a really good feeling, to be in shape all the time.

RD: For someone whos never been there, can you describe what its like walking to the ring with hundreds of people watching, maybe thousands for a televised fight, and the bright lights shining on you?

Chad Dawson: Ive been there and its a nervous feeling. Its like a bloo d rush. I mean, when Im
walking out I hear all the people screaming my name. I try to block it out, but its hard to. But once the fight starts, once the bell rings, I block all of that out. Its just me and the guy in front of me. Thats it.

Many thanks to Chad Dawson for taking the time to chat with Eastside. The Chad Dawson - Darnell Wilson bout takes place on the undercard of the Scott Pemberton -
James Crawford super middleweight bout.
