IBF orders Hinteregger v Matolcsi Rematch

01.21.04 - The International Boxing Federation (IBF) officially ordered a mandatory rematch for their Intercontinental superwelterweight crown between dethroned Austrian Gotthard Hinteregger and his conqueror and new champion Jozsef Matolcsi of Hungary.

In his first defence, Hinteregger clashed with Matolcsi on October 8 in Brentwood, England and lost his title in a highly dramatic fight. The Vienna native floored Matolcsi a staggering four times in the first seven rounds, shook him more than some referees would have allowed – until one right hand straight out of the ‘Last-chance-Saloon’ early in round eight caught Hinteregger and knocked him out. As for the reason an immediate rematch was ordered by the IBF, their President for Europe, Benedetto Montella said: “The rematch, which must take place by February 28, 2004, is due because of the violation of the IBF rule of the (mandatory) urin analysis (…), which did not occur.”

Hinteregger’s manager Olaf Schroeder obviously is pleased with the decision, especially since his crestfallen ex-champion vowed revanche within days after the fight. “’Boxing News’ reporter Tony Connolly wrote in his fight report: ‘(Matolcsi) gave the impression you were going to have to shoot him to stop him’. Then suddenly there is no doping test, despite the fact that this was by no means a backwoods promotion. Make of that what you will, but the fact is that an integral rule has been violated and we are happy with the IBF’s decision in this case,” said Schroeder.
