Hopkins Stops De La Hoya!

18.09.04 Middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins scored a ninth round knockout over Oscar De La Hoya Saturday night in Las Vegas. De La Hoya fought well up to the point where Bernard Hopkins connected with a left hook to the body that dropped De La Hoya to the canvas. De La Hoya lay cringing in agony, banging the canvas again and again, as if punctuating the end of a once great career. He attempted to get up, but only could moan helplessly instead. In the end, Hopkins was just too strong for De La Hoya, who had originally started his professional career at 130. The fight was stopped by referee Kenny Bayless at 1:38 of the ninth round. Hopkins (45-2-1, 32 knockouts) was ahead on two scorecards and behind on a third in a cautiously fought bout when he suddenly landed the punches just below De La Hoya's rib cage to retain his undisputed middleweight title in his 19th title defense.
