Valuev responds to Chagaev

Team Sauerland are seriously concerned about Ruslan Chagaev´s eyesight following his dubious comments on Saturday´s showdown between Nikolai Valuev and John Ruiz. Even though the Russian Giant was ahead on all scorecards (116-111, 116-113 and 114-113), and even though the international media praised him for “dominating” his opponent, Chagaev questioned the decision by the WBA officials. He said: “For me, the fight was at the most a draw. I even leaned toward Ruiz..

Team Sauerland managing director Chris Meyer was more than surprised about Chagaev´s remarks. “There is no doubt that Nikolai Valuev won this fight clearly,” he said. “It looks like there is some truth to the rumours that Chagaev has problems with his eyes. Anyone with a clear vision saw that Valuev deserved to win.”

The international media praised the Russian Giant for a much-improved performance. The Daily Telegraph wrote: “On closer examination of the 12 rounds, Valuev will clearly be seen to have dominated Ruiz with his jab, and 84 inch reach, allied with having the greater skills he showed when he outpointed former titleholder Sergei Liakhovich, from Belarus, winning every round in a February 2008 title eliminator at the Nuremberg Arena.” Bild, Germany´s biggest-selling tabloid, wrote on their webpage: “Gigantic win for Russian Giant. All in all it was a sovereign victory.”

The new WBA heavyweight champion is in Cologne on Monday where he will be a guest in TV Total, one of Germany´s most popular TV shows hosted by famous entertainer Stefan Raab. He will return to the ring on December 13, with opponent and venue to be determined in the coming weeks. There will definitely be no third meeting with Ruiz.
