Courage is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose.
The Polish crowd composed of great fight fans was poised for a party; a predictable celebration. Hell, why not? Feather-fisted Zuri Lawrence (23-14-4) was coming in on short notice against favored Albert “The Dragon” Sosnowski from Warsaw, Poland who sported a 24-fight win streak . His record coming in was a gaudy 42-1. The crowd was noisy and ready. The delicious smell of pierogis, golabki, and krokiet was in the air. The Polish flag with its two horizontal fields of white on top and red on bottom was in evidence as well.
There was only one problem to this fistic occasion, Lawrence played the role of party-pooper and then some as he beat “The Dragon” by UD. Indeed, the three judges Robin Taylor, Julie Lederman and Steve Weisfeld all saw the fight the same way--80-72.
Using his superior height and reach (of 79’), Zuri was able to out-jab Sosnowski throughout. As he gained confidence going into the later rounds, he rocked the Pole with lefts and rights. Had he been able to turn over his punches and plant his feet, he would have sent Sosnowski to Polski Dreamland. As it was, Sosnowski sported a badly swollen right eye and a cut over his left eye all of which constituted the face of a loser.
Yes, on this rainy night of August 6, 2008 at the Aviator Sports Arena in Brooklyn, the judges did themselves proud and so did Zuri Lawrence as he refused to play the role of rollover. Zuri lacks some things in the ring, but one of them is not heart.
