Klitschko-Thompson: Wladimir faces tough Hamburg test

boxing10.07.08 - World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has described his opponent this Saturday, Tony Thompson, as a ‘little bit special’ as he prepares to defend of his IBF, WBO and WBC titles at the Color Arena in Hamburg.

Speaking to Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour the big Ukrainian said: “I will not underestimate this opponent. He hasn’t lost in the last eight years. He is very confident. He’s famous in Hamburg. He knocked out Luan Krasniqi spectacularly in their fight in their fight last year.

“He’s an unorthodox fighter, he doesn’t fight impressively, but he’s very effective with his style. He is a south paw fighter. I’ll have to really adjust myself to his style.”

Klitschko also revealed that a queue is forming to fight him, with the UK’s David Haye and Russia’s Aleksander Povetkin in-line for a title shot. He described Haye as ‘difficult to handle’ and plans to teach him a lesson in ‘behaviour’ should they meet in the ring..

"I didn't know anything about this guy three months ago

“Then I got a chance to meet him in London. And that was a pleasant meeting but the guy is nuts.”

Meanwhile Klitschko said he was full of “respect” for Povetkin, but thinks he lacks experience. He said:

“He’s Olympic champion, but not experienced enough to be in the professional ring. But of course, he is dangerous.”
