Cotto Fans Roadtrip from Tennessee to Atlantic City

cotto mayweather22.04.08 - By Scoop Malinowski: There they were - three Puerto Rican fans holding up a banner that read, "Cotto #1 Boricua, We Want Mayweather." I just had to run over and get their story. As it turns out, the trio of Cotto supporters had driven all the way up to New Jersey from Tennessee to back their man.

Here is their story, as told by Angel Hernandez: "To be the best boxer you have to go to the distance every time you step into the ring. Miguel Cotto has proved to the world he is now capable of going the extra mile to prove he has the heart and courage to fight the best fighters out there. That's the influence he has given to boxing fans, to always go the extra mile. That is what we saw in the Cotto-Gomez fight in Atlantic City: We're three fans that are self-considered Cotto's best fans and we held a banner that said, "We want Mayweather.."

Richard Gonzalez, Xavier Birriel and myself drove ten hours from Tennessee to Atlantic City to demonstrate our loyalty towards Puerto Rico's boxing idol Miguel Cotto. We heard that Cotto was fighting in Atlantic City and we didn't think twice to buy the tickets since we think he is the most complete boxer out there right now. Cotto has the heart, the force, the wisdom, and the love of a country making him the most dangerous welterweight out there.

"Tired of Mayweather's choice to not fight the best of the best"

Myself and Richard had the idea to create a banner for the fight and we designed it and sent it to our friend Xavier to print it at a printing company in Puerto Rico. Xavier came from Puerto Rico to watch the fight and to bring the banner. We made the banner with the intention to support Cotto and to encourage other boxing fans to think about how it will be a fight between Mayweather and Cotto. We are tired of Mayweather's choice to not fight the best of the best. If he considers himself the best, why not fight Miguel Cotto? A true champion has the guts to fight anyone.

This was the first Cotto fight we have assisted on in the United States. We have been following his career since he used to fight in Puerto Rico.

The fight was worth the long trip. We shared driving which made it better for us. We were so excited about the fight that we were talking about boxing all the way to Atlantic City. The night of the fight we saw the famous baseball player Sammy Sosa, the Mexican boxer and Cotto's next challenger Margarito, and many other celebrities.

"One guy even tried to steal the banner"

We received a lot of feedback from Cotto fans about the banner. One guy even tried to steal the banner from us while we were in the bathroom. During the fight a group of fans gathered around us to support our cause. After the fight many people told us that we were 100% right, that Mayweather should stop running from Cotto.

Mayweather is scared of Cotto after seeing his performance against Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Alfonso Gomez and many other boxers that they both fought. Mayweather's weakness is his body and Cotto has the perfect tool for it - his left hook. Cotto has done what Mayweather couldn't do with a lot of boxers. Mayweather has to fight Cotto if he wants to be remembered as the true best pound-for-pound in the world. If he decides to do the fight it will be the Fight of the Century.

Margarito is a good boxer but Cotto will exit victoriously. Margarito is a strong and tall boxer and he has demonstrated that he has a lot of heart but Cotto has more lateral movements and is faster, a type of fighter that Margarito hasn't been able to decipher.
