Amateur Standout Qa’id Muhammad Enters The Pro Ranks With Fourth Round Knockout

(ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.) – Qa’id Muhammad (Atlantic City, N.J.) made a triumphant professional debut on Friday, March 7, recording a thundering fourth round knockout of Mario Gaxiola (Las Vegas, Nev.) at the Foxwoods Resort Casino’s legendary Fox Theatre..

Muhammad pummeled Gaxiola with a rare combination of speed and power from the opening bell. The 18-year-old super flyweight dropped Gaxiola to the canvas with a vicious left hook late in the first round, and continued the onslaught in the next round. Gaxiola was down again in the second as Muhammad continued to showcase his patented speed with strong combinations.

Yet Gaxiola somehow withstood the barrage of punches until the final seconds of the fight. Muhammad landed a picture-perfect left hook in the last second of the bout, sending Gaxiola crashing to the mat for the final time and ending the fight in spectacular fashion. Muhammad waited in the locker room for over six hours before stepping into the ring for the first time as a professional. Yet the outcome was more than worth the wait for the heavy-handed Muhammad. His impressive victory was the final fight ever at the historic Fox Theatre, but the start to a promising career.

"I was surprised he got up the first two times,'' Muhammad said. "I was thinking that he would never stay down,” Muhammad said. '”But I caught him with the perfect punch at the end.''

Muhammad made the leap following an impressive amateur career, which included a berth on the 2007 Pan American Games team and a second place finish at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
