Castillo Fails To Make Weight
By Matthew Hurley: Jose Luis Castillo’s notorious inability to make weight has cost him dearly in the past, including a six month suspension and a $250,000 fine after coming in 4 ˝ pounds over the limit for his rubbermatch with the late Diego Corrales. Castillo had previously come in overweight for their rematch, turning that bout into a non-title affair. He won that bout by fourth round knockout. Today the repeat offender decided he wasn’t even going to give the scales a chance to prove that once again his issue with extra pounds would put a scheduled fight in jeopardy.

Castillo, 56-8-1 with 48 KOs, the WBC number two rated super lightweight contender was to have fought number one ranked contender Timothy Bradley, 21-0 with 11 KOs in a title elimination bout on the undercard of the Samuel Peter – Oleg Maskaez heavyweight bout in Cancun, Mexico. Two hours before the official weigh-in Castillo was 4 ˝ pounds over the 140 pound limit. At the official weigh-in Bradley tipped the scales at 139 pounds. Castillo was a no-show. Reports indicate that a doctor who examined Castillo after the unofficial weigh-in deemed him unfit to fight thus canceling the bout.
According to WBC president Jose Sulaiman, Bradley will now be named the mandatory super lightweight challenger. Bradley’s management accepted the strange turn of event in stride and now plan to begin negotiations for a fight with WBC champion Junior Witter.
