Arena Boxing Back In Turkey

On April 25th 2008 it’s “Merhaba, ARENA Box-Promotion” again. Ahmet Öner will promote his second show in Turkey featuring Selcuk Aydin who takes on South Africa’s Lucky Lewele for the WBC International welterweight championship in his home-town Trabzon. At the Black Sea ARENA’s “Mini-Tyson” is already a superstar..

“I think Selcuk got what it takes to become a national hero in Turkey and a world class fighter. He is very powerful and explosive, throws heavy body shots and always goes for the ko. That’s why people love to watch him. Against Lewele he can prove that he can make it to the top of the world.”

Lewele had won the international title against ARENA’s Alpaslan Agüzüm in March 2007, and then lost it to Bongani Mwelase who was meant to defend it against mandatory challenger Selcuk Aydin. Mwelase pulled out of the fight which was highly disputed in South African press so the WBC announced that Aydin and Lewele will fight for the vacant belt.

What does “Mini-Tyson” think about the fight?

Selcuk: “I don’t care who I’m fighting. It means a lot to me that Ahmet gave me the chance to fight in front of my home crowd. That’s a dream come true. I want to show all my people what I’m capable of. And I want to step up to my nickname “Mini-Tyson” and knock out my opponent.”

It will be the first show supervised by the newly founded Turkish professional boxing commission. When ARENA brought back professional boxing to Turkey after 30 years on June 16th 2007 for Sinan Samil Sam vs. Oliver McCall they had brought the officials from the German boxing commission (BDB).

Also on the card: middleweight prospect Mustafa Karagöllü and Olympic silver medallist Atagün Yalcinkaya.
