Get to know the name Yuriorkis Gamboa; Gamboa stops Edwards in US television debut

By Phil Santos – - Super prospect and Cuban Gold Medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa made his US television debut tonight on Friday Night Fights. His opponent Johnnie Edwards was supposed to offer some resistance and test the fast rising youngster. Gamboa would have none of it. He wasted no time in attacking Edwards with quick, stinging punches which landed Edwards on the canvas via a left hook only 30 seconds into the 1st round.

The knockdown appeared to surprise Edwards who rose to his feet and seemed to have his wits about him. Again Gamboa attacked relentlessly finally finishing Edwards off with a couple of hard right hands. The fight was immediately called to a halt following the second knockdown at the 1:34 mark of the opening frame. Edwards got up under his own power but was badly wobbled and his legs were still shaky.

Yuriorkis Gamboa made a hell of a splash in his US television debut delivering the type of performance that fight fans crave. He has limitless potential at Super Featherweight and with his extensive amateur background, Olympic success and now early professional accomplishments he may be a candidate to advance to World Title contention with having to amass 25-30 fights.

Gamboa runs his perfect record to 9-0 (8) despite having turned pro only 10 months ago. With the loss Johnnie Edwards drops to 13-2-1 (7).
