Serrano Honors Iran "The Blade" Barkley

New York, NY -- State Senator Serrano today honored Iran "The Blade" Barkley, former Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World, as part of an annuel celebration of Black History Month with Congressman Josť E. Serrano..

Iran Barkley was born, raised and continues to live in the South Bronx community. In 1988, against strong odds, he defeated Thomas Hearns by TKO to become the Middleweight Champion of the World.

"He embodies the strength and resilience of the Bronx," said Senator Serrano, a lifelong boxing fan and Ranking Member of the Senate's Tourism, Recreation and Sports Development Committee. "Iran is no stranger to hardship, and yet time and again he has been able to fight back and win - both inside and outside the ring."

The day's other honorees included Dean Meminger, Reporter and Anchor for NY1 News, and Dr. Samuel J. Daniel, President and CEO of North General Hospital.

In recent years, Mr. Barkley has given back to his community. He was honored in October 2007 by the World Boxing Council, during the first anniversary of its World Boxing Cares initiative, for his positive impact on local children and families.

"We are thrilled to recognize Iran for his contributions to boxing and the Bronx as part of this fabulous celebration of Black History," said the Senator.

Senator Serrano and Mr. Barkley will be interviewed tonight by Joey Reynolds on WOR Radio 710.
