Pavlik-Trinidad in talks for June

felix trinidad16.02.08 - Nathan King: Win or lose Saturday, Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KO) will still keep his middleweight crown. Bob Arum, Pavlik’s promoter, is trying to workout his young champion’s next fight and first defense of his middleweight title. Although “Irish” John Duddy, a popular rising contender, appears to be the leading candidate, it has been reported earlier by Dan Rafael that Bob Arum has been in talks with Don King, Felix Trinidad’s promoter, about a possible match with the former three-division champion from Puerto Rico. The clash would headline an HBO PPV card on June 7, the night before the annual Puerto Rican Day parade. "We've talked," Arum said.

"Then King went down to Puerto Rico to meet with Trinidad last week. Then we spoke this week before he went to Germany and he said the meeting with the Trinidad went positively."

Trinidad (42-3, 35 KO) is coming off a unanimous decision to loss to Roy Jones Jr. on January 19. The main concern is whether or not Trinidad can make the middleweight limit of 160 lbs given the fact that Arum has stated that the fight has to be at that weight. "If Trinidad can make that weight and provided the [revenue] split is right, we would love to make the fight," Arum said. "But I won't know for sure until I meet with King."

According to Arum, Pavlik hasn’t been involved with any discussions, although Top Rank employees and Cameron Dunkin, Pavlik’s trainer, are well aware of the situation.
