The Juan Carlos Gomez camp, Arena Box-Promotion, had stated that he couldn't be ready by that date. Universum contends that Gomez knew he would be in a WBC eliminator last October and knew about the early January purse bid in November.
Vladimir Virchis, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to the fight at a press conference last week. However, through his advisor Oleg Hug, who is also in charge as a matchmaker for Arena Box-promotion, Virchis announced that he also believes the preparation time is not sufficient and that he wants a larger purse.
Virchis' trainer Konny Mittermeier was surpised by the development. "Until last Friday here in Hamburg we had a lot of fun, great motivation and always trained exactly toward our planned goal. What's "riding" him now is absolutely incomprehensible to me."
A final decision as to the status of the eliminator will be made by the WBC.
In any case, the March 8th Universum Champions Night in Krefeld will take place, featuring a WBC cruiserweight eliminator between Rudolf Kraj and Matt Godfrey, plus female world championships with Ina Menzer and Alesia Graf.
