Hatton And Trainer Graham Rumored To Be Splitting After Defeat

By Matthew Hurley: After his defeat by tenth round knockout at the hands of Floyd Mayweather on December 8th the apparent fallout in the Ricky Hatton camp may be under way. Hatton flew home to Manchester from Las Vegas yesterday without trainer Billy Graham. Graham is still in Vegas..

The tension between fighter and trainer may have arisen over Graham’s desire to see Hatton retire, although after the fight he indicated that he would stick by Hatton whatever the fighter’s decision may be. There is also the notion that Hatton, never before defeated as a professional, is reeling emotionally from his first loss and is looking to place blame on someone else’s shoulders. This is not a new phenomenon in boxing, a fighter ditching a long time trainer and mentor after a brutal defeat. Even as classy a man as the great Alexis Arguello pointed the finger at trainer Eddie Futch after his first loss to Aaron Pryor and promptly dismissed him.

Hatton’s father Ray told the UK Mirror that, “Nothing’s happened to my knowledge and I would be the first to know because Ricky leaves me to handle things like this.”

Hatton and Graham have been together since the ‘Hit Man’ turned professional at eighteen.

Hatton is also mulling over what he will do next in the ring.

“I’ll have a rest, then sit down and decide whether my next fight will be at welterweight or junior welterweight,” he said.

Hatton has indicated that he would like another shot at Mayweather, an idea that seems more than a bit far-fetched, and may have been another source of contention between the fighter and Graham.
