Peter Quillin: Brooklyn “Chocolate” packs more dynamite than Minnesota “TNT”

David Pambianchi: On December 13, 2007, at the Roseland Ballroom, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin faced Troy “TNT” Lowry for a scheduled 8 rounds Middleweight bout, posted “Special Attraction.” Lowry spent a substantial amount of time slipping and holding, trying to keep from fighting off the floor in the first round, trying to get his bearings while a quick and stinging Quillin kept control of the fight. The only thing “special” about the match was a “Kid Chocolate” especially hard right that put Lowry onto the mat at the opening of the second round, ending the bout..

That’s pretty much it. However, some lucky New Yorker’s did get the satisfaction of receiving the traditional variety of treats after the TKO and the 16-0 Quillin chocolate-toss.

Noriko Kariya: Heart of Gold, but Fist of Iron

On December 13, 2007, Noriko Kariya met Salina Jordan at the Roseland Ballroom for a schedule 4 rounds Bantamweight bout.

Almost defenseless, gloves down and awkwardly punching from the waist, Salina Jordan somehow summoned the spirit to keep standing for the first two rounds under a heavy, unchecked left and right bombardment from Noriko Kariya. But early in the third, seeing Salina, clumsy and dizzied, and with no sign of fatigue from the Noriko onslaught, the referee stopped the fight.

Stepping up her training and varying her style, Noriko attempts to reach her full potential. Her warm, disarming smile and sincere personality belie the tough competitor in the ring. Jill Diamond of WBC’s Championship Committee comments, “She’s New York’s best kept secret.”

No mystery tonight, she won this match by TKO.
