Enzo Calzaghe laughs at Woods’ “Scared” claims

08.12.07 - By Andrew Wake: Enzo Calzaghe has laughed at claims from IBF light heavyweight titlist Clinton Woods suggesting that the world class trainer and his son, undisputed super middleweight champion, Joe, are afraid of a match up with the Sheffield fighter. Enzo, who has not been the losing corner of a fight in over two years, scoffed in an interview with the South Wales Argus “Scared of Clinton Woods, what a total joke. It would be one of our easiest fights ever against bloke who must have amnesia; he’s been put on the floor three times against nobodies..

“This isn’t a playground, you can’t just talk your way into a scrap, Woods should go back to school and study economics.

“HBO and any other American broadcaster wouldn’t touch Calzaghe versus Woods with a barge-pole, that’s the only issue. Clinton needs a reality check, the truth is he’s not even close to Joe’s level.”

He added, “England versus Wales is only an issue if both fighters have a chance and unless Joe boxes with a blindfold on, this would be a total mismatch.”

Calzaghe senior’s comments about at the ease in which his son would beat Woods echo the sentiments Joe himself made in a recent interview with me for his official website. Undefeated Joe said, “Woods is game and strong and it would be interesting for as long as it goes on but in the end I’d smash him up”.

“Before my business as a World Champion Boxer is done I want the scalps of the biggest names, Woods isn’t a big name but Hopkins is.”

It seems, for now at least, Woods is out of the picture and American braggadocio Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins remains prime target.
