Donaire Stops Maldonado
01.12.07 - By Scott Frake: International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. (19-1-1, 12KOs) destroyed challenger Luis Maldonado (37-2-1, 28KOs) in the 8th round of a scheduled 12-round title bout at the the Foxwood Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. As in his bout with Vic Darchinyan, Donaire used his left hook effectively, catching Maldonado, ranked 4th in the IBF, frequently as he waded in to try and mix it up. At the end of the 7th round, Donaire knocked Maldonado with a clubbing left hand.
Donaire finished off Maldonado at the start of the 8th, blasting him repeatedly with left hooks and causing the referee to step in and halt the bout at 1:16 of the 8th. It was simply a case of Donaire having too much speed, skill and fire power for Maldonado to contend with. Though he kept fighting hard until the end, Maldonado couldn't handle Donaire's power and didn't have the defensive ability avoid his big shots. Donaire's left hook makes it especially difficult to get near him, because if a fighter like Maldonado gets within range, Donaire lashes out his hook with great effectiveness.
