He Fights Like a Man to Become a Woman

08.06.04 - By Joe Rein: If you had to create a storyline for a fight film, no one would buy this one. It’s just too unbelievable…but it’s true.

In the most macho of martial arts sports, Thai kickboxing, a transvestite fighter, who became a champion, and won 20 of 22 fights, with a reputation of being especially brutal, was only motivated to earn enough money to get a sex-change operation.

He got the money. Got the operation. And is now a model in Thailand. He can no longer fight because they only allow men.

His (her ?) name is Nong Toom, and the film based on his life, “Beautiful Boxer,” is being shown here at UCLA this Tuesday.

Judging from the reviews, this is not a cheapie-exploitation film; its won prizes at film festivals around the world. I’ll give you my take on it next week.
