Alex Petkovic challenges Johnny Nelson

11.11.03 - Undefeated German cruiserweight contender Alexander Petkovic is facing the first world title shot of his career on November 15 in Southern Germany’s Bayreuth. The 23-year-old will challenge reigning WBO 190 pound champion Johnny Nelson at the Bavarian Oberfrankenhalle on Saturday. For the 36-year-old British it will be the eleventh defense of the title he won back in March of 1999.

“Alex is a tough fighter. He really can punch. Unfortunately he is facing The champion: Me”, Nelson, 48-12-2 (28), said on yesterday’s press conference in Bayreuth where he participated over the phone.

Nelson will move to Germany on Wednesday to attend the public workout in Bayreuth. The experienced British fighter preferred to conclude his preparations in his own gym in Sheffield before leaving to the European continent.

“I don’t want to promise anything too early”, Nelson said. “I had a very good preparation with classy sparring partners. Rudy May for classical style of boxing and Mehmet Hemden for aggressiveness.”

While he performed quite inconsistent in the early stages of his career, Nelson is currently undefeated since 1995 and won 17 of his last 18 contests. In his last fight he scored a 12-round draw against Guillermo Jones.

Alexander Petkovic, 28-0-3 (15), was born and raised in Southern Germany’s Munich. His parents are of Yugoslav origin. Since turning pro in December of 1997 Petkovic is training at the gym of Universum Box-Promotion in Hamburg.

„I didn’t care where the fight against Nelson takes place. Most important for me was that we finally meet inside the ring”, Petkovic said who is the WBO #1 contender since several months. Besides he is carrying the WBC international title since knocking out Frenchman Alain Simon in March of this year.

“I expect the fight to last 12 rounds. I want to become world champion badly and I’m convinced that I’m going to win on Saturday.”

The weigh-in will be on Friday, 15:00, at Lohengrintherme, Kurpromenade 5 in Bayreuth.

On the undercard Hungarian Zsolt Erdei, 17-0 (12) - WBO #3 ranked light heavyweight contender and intercontinental champ - faces Ramdane Serdjane from France.

Also in action: 6 foot 7 Russian heavyweight prospect Alexander Dimitrenko, 10-0 (6).

In another title fight world champion Daisy Lang is defending her WIBF jr. bantamweight belt against Galina Ivanova Gumliiska in a contest between two Bulgarian women.
