Alejandro “Ñaco” Berrío and Lucian Bute Collide Tonight!
By Jaime Castro-Núñez: International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Alejandro “Ñaco” Berrío (26-4, 25 KOs) of Cartagena, Colombia, hopes to retain his belt tonight by defeating southpaw Lucian Bute (20-0, 16 Kos) of Galati, Romania, at Montreal’s Bell Centre. The 31-year-old Berrío will be making the first defense of the crown he captured last March when he knocked out the Russia-born Robert Stieglitz in Rostock, Germany.

“Ñaco,” who trained in his native Cartagena at Centro de Alto Rendimiento, supervised by José “Panamericano” Vásquez, Adolfo Periñán, and Dalmiro Díaz, stated that “I’m hundred percent ready. There’re no excuses because my preparation in Cartagena was excellent. My fans can be tranquil because I’ll retain my title.” Regarding his tough opponent, the titleholder remarked that “He [Bute] is a southpaw, tall boxer who often times leaves himself unprotected. I have to take advantage of that situation and throw my hands.” “Ñaco is in good condition and ready to retain his belt,” said his trainer Dalmiro Díaz.
Challenger Lucian Bute, on the other hand, is aware of Berrío’s punching power and will try to become the second Romanian-Canadian champion by outboxing “Ñaco” in his adoptive hometown of Montreal. Fast and talented, the 27-year-old Romanian has predicted a victory and assured his fans that tonight he will fight like a champion.
