19.10.07 - By Craig Mastendri: Lucian Bute’s perfect record improved to 21-0 17 KO’s over Alejandro Berrio who fell to 26-5, 25 KO’s as referee Marlon Wright stepped in and called a halt to the bout in the latter half of the 11th round. Berrio was out on his feet and slumped helpless in the corner as a result of a double straight left..

The fight had a textbook “Lefty vs. Righty” pattern from beginning to end. Bute used his southpaw 1,2, movement, and hook combo’s to counter Berrio’s stalking right hand aggression. Berrio landed more punches in some rounds but the more significant shots came from Bute. Lucian patiently countered his orthodox opponent with counter straight lefts and took his time finding openings. I had Bute ahead on points, 7 rounds to 3, going into the eleventh.
Berrio applied consistent pressure and tried to adjust to Bute’s sharp shooting, with double and triple right hands. He moved forward throughout and was determined to press and wear on Bute. He won a few rounds just with aggression and volume but eventually fell victim to viciously accurate counters. He began winding up hooks and upper’s as he tried looping shots at Bute hoping to catch him pulling back, to no avail.
Bute took another giant step forward by entering the 168lb title picture. Technically speaking the Winner of Calzaghe vs Kessler could “Officially’ unify all the Super Middle Weight belts verusus Bute. Perhaps a fight versus the likes of Anthony Mundine or Jeff Lacy could cement a shot with the real champion.
