Juan Carlos Gomez Out Works Oliver McCall! Wins the Rematch and the WBC International Title by Unanimous Decision!

19.l0.07 - By Craig Mastendri: Juan Carlos Gomez moved forward to 43-1 with 35 KO’s in a performance where he dictated the pace and controlled most of the action versus Oliver McCall who drops to 51-9 36 KO’s. The scorecards were unanimous, 118-110, 118-110, and 116-112. The win, puts the 34 year-old Gomez much closer to the opportunity against top opposition in the Heavyweight division. So far, Yanqui Diaz, Sinan Samil Sam, and McCall are his best competition. That seems sure to change soon enough.!

Gomez’s southpaw stance, jab, and looping left caused problems as McCall remained in a defensive shell. McCall chose to walk backwards for the first half of the fight, looking to counter, but rarely attempting it. When McCall did throw? Gomez either slipped or was able to tie him up, reset, and continue his control.

JC’s very patient, relaxed, focus and good conditioning seemed a product of the earlier meeting between them, which was deemed a “No contest.” Gomez won that fight as well, but the result was changed on a failed drug test.

For McCall, the “Tortoise and the Hare” strategy seemed part of an energy saving plan. It didn’t have the happy ending involving his big right hand. McCall made a late surge, where he was able to press some action, and land a few shots but he continued falling short. His defense was good but his offense was lousy. Its an uncertain horizon at this stage. It seems he’ll still be a viable name opponent for up coming HW’s, but has run out of “Championship” shots.
