Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In “Latin Fury”

By Matthew Hurley: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. of Mexico, 33-0-1 with 26 KOs will face off against Ray Sanchez of Albuquerque, 20-1 with 15 KOs at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque on December 1st in a junior middleweight contest. The pay per view card will also feature former flyweight and super flyweight champion Jorge Arce of Mexico, 47-4 with 36 KOs against Wyndel Janiola from the Philippines, 19-4 with 9 KOs..

julio cesar chavez jr.Word Boxing Organization 108 pound champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico, 29-0 with 6 KOs will fight Mexico’s Manuel Vargas, 24-2 with 10 KOs in defense of his title. The telecast opens with super lightweight Mike Alvarado of Denver, 18-0 with 12 KOs taking on Henry Bruseles of Puerto Rico, 25-3-1 with 14 KOs.

The pay per view telecast, billed as “Latin Fury” will cost $34.95 and will be blacked out in the Albuquerque area unless the Tingley Coliseum is sold out.

Both Chavez and Sanchez acknowledge that the fight will be the toughest of their respective careers.

“I know what skills I have,” Sanchez remarked at the press conference announcing the fight. “I know what my experience is and I know my power is more devastating than his. I might be the underdog but if he thinks he’s coming into my hometown to beat me, he’s got another thing coming.”

Chavez, suppressing a grin, said, “Prepare yourself well. You’re going to need everything you have when we climb into the ring to fight.”

Sanchez countered with, “He’s in for a rude awakening.”

Also on the dais was popular Mexican fighter Jorge Arce. The lollipop loving Arce, who will enter the bout as a bantamweight, said, “After I defeat Janiola I want (WBO champion) Gerry Penalosa.”

Fighting on the non-televised undercard will be Matthew Esquibel, 6-0 with 3 KOs against Cuauhtemoc Mendoza, 3-3-1 with 1 KO in a four round bout and Anthony Vialpondo, 2-0 in four rounder with Jose Garcia, 1-2.

Tickets for the event go on sale Tuesday morning at 10 AM.
