Czyz benefit set for Sept. 7 in Clifton

24.08.07 - A fund raiser to help former champion Bobby Czyz pay mounting medical bills has been scheduled for Sept. 7 in Clifton. Admission to "Bobby Czyz Night" at Bliss Lounge (955 Allwood Road) will cost $20 and all proceeds will benefit Czyz, who was nearly killed in an April 13 car accident in Millstone Township. Czyz, a Wanaque native and Lakeland High School graduate, spent more than a month in intensive care after surviving the fiery wreck, but the two-time world champion somehow managed to avoid any debilitating physical damage. The accident also marked the continuation of a sad, trying stretch for Czyz.

His former wife, Kimberly Ross, died at 47 on Dec. 19 after a long illness. Kimberly Ross was also survived by their daughter, Mercedes Czyz. Kimberly Ross was a daughter of former Herald News boxing writer and columnist Rosemarie Ross, a member of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame.

The 45-year-old Czyz, who retired from boxing in 1998 to focus on a once-blossoming broadcasting career, will be celebrated two weeks from tonight by former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, former heavyweight contender Chuck Wepner and master of ceremonies "Goumba Johnny," a popular on-air personality for WKTU-FM in New York. The event, which is open to the public, will include a video montage of Czyz's 18-year professional career and a sports memorabilia auction.

After being built by the Duvas into an attraction at Totowa's "Ice World" in the early 1980s, Czyz went on to win the International Boxing Federation light heavyweight and World Boxing Association cruiserweight titles. He was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997, before finishing his career with a 44-8 record, including 28 knockouts.
