Kimbrough wins IBC World Lightweight championship
23.08.07 - By Pat Testa: Verquan Kimbrough scored a lopsided decision over Rodney Jones Thursday night at Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming resort in Chester, W VA to win the IBC world lightweight title. Kimbrough,(18-1-1) of Aliquippa, PA, dominated the bout from the onset and never let Jones(27-7) establish any offensive threat. Relying on a punishing left jab, Kimbrough kept Jones at bay and dictated the action all 12 rounds.

Kimbrough floored Jones with a powerful left-right combination in the 2nd round, delighting the partisan near capacity crowd. In the 3rd round, Kimbrough began landing left hooks at will, and staggered Jones again near the end of the round.
The middle rounds saw Kimbrough peppering the face of Jones with jabs and hooks; with virtually nothing coming back from Jones. In fact, Kimbrough landed almost all the power shots that were thrown in the fight. In the beginning of the 8th round Jones finally showed signs of life, landing a couple of combinations. However, Kimbrough quickly dashed any hopes of a comeback by slamming more left hooks to the head of Jones.
Kimbrough put on a counterpunching clinic the entire fight and did an excellent job of keeping Jones at the end of his punches. The scores of the bout were 119-108, 119-108 and 120-106 in favor of Kimbrough.
In the co-feature, heavyweight Brian "the beast" Minto knocked down Ray Lansford 3 times in the 1st round, ending the fight after just 1:56 to set up a fall showdown with the unbeaten Joe Mesi. Minto moves to 28-2 with 17 knockouts.
