Daniel Ponce De Leon Boom-Boom's Rey Bautista

daniel ponce deleon12.08.07 - By Sean Ocampo: It was a total annihilation for WBO Super Batamweight Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon as he knocked out undefeated Filipino Rey "Boom-Boom" Bautista in just one round during the main event of "The World Cup of Boxing". The Philippines however defeated Mexico five wins to one for the coveted World Cup.

It was fireworks during the early seconds of the first round, as both fighters unloaded their best punches but it was clear that Ponce De Leon's power is too much too handle for the 21 year old Bautista.

A crisp left hand from Ponce De Leon made Bautista kiss the canvas for the third time in his career. A clearly dazed Bautista barely beat the 10 count from the referee. Ponce De Leon jumped on the dazed challenger and brutalized him with seriously hard combinations. Another crushing left hand from Ponce De Leon made Bautista fall for the second and final time. The fight was stopped at 2:30 of the very first round.

Daniel Ponce De Leon successfully defended his WBO title for the fifth time after winning the vacant title during first edition of the World Cup in 2005. Probable unification fights with Israel Vazquez (WBC), Celestino Caballero (WBA) and Steve Molitor (IBF) looms in the horizon for the young champion. He improved his record to 32-1-0 (29 KOs) with his devastating victory.

As for Rey "Boom-Boom" Bautista, this is first ever defeat as a professional since debuting in 2003. His record fell to 23-1-0 (17 KOs).
