Diaz Decisions Morales! "I'm Not Going To Fight Anymore." - Morales

erik morales04.08.07 - By Sasha "Kozlov" Baranov: WBC lightweight champion David Diaz (33-1-1, 17 KOs) defeated former three time division champion Erik Morales (48-6, 34 KOs) tonight at the Allstate Arena, in Rosemont, Illinois, winning a close 12-round unanimous decision, and in the process preventing Morales, 30, from winning a fourth division title. Immediately afterwards, Morales announced his retirement, saying “I'm not going to fight anymore. I've taken far too many punches, particularly to the head area. Punches to the head are really beginning to bother me.”

The loss was particularly troubling for Morales, as it was his fifth in his last six fights. In the first round, it appeared Morales would go out a winner, when he knocked Diaz down late in the round. However, Diaz, 31, scored a knockdown of his own in the next round, dropping Morales with a big left hand.

In rounds three though seven, Morales landed the harder shots, and badly bruised Diaz’s right eye in the process. However, Morales begin to tire noticeably by the eighth round, losing much of the power from his punches and throwing less often. Diaz seemed to take control of the bout during the last four rounds, throwing many more punches and constantly pressing forward and making Morales work to defend constantly.

In the 12th round, Morales attempted to mount a rally, trying to score a knockout. However, Diaz quickly turned the tables and dominated the rest of the rounds, putting a cap on his victory.
