Chazz Witherspoon Stops Griffis in 9th round TKO

chazz witherspoon(Chazz Witherspoon, pictured here) 27.07.07 - By Gary Jones: Undefeated heavyweight boxing prospect Chazz Witherspoon (19-0, 13 KOs) stopped Talmadge Griffis (24-7-3, 12 KOs) in the 9th round tonight at the City Center, in Saratoga Springs, New York. The fight was mostly dull, with the hulking 6'4" Witherspoon throwing almost exclusively jabs. When he did throw a right hand, on rare occasions, it was thrown without much power or speed, and lacked snap.

However, Witherspoon's punches had a wearing down effect on Griffis, as he appeared to fade over the rounds from eating a lot of jabs thrown by Witherspoon. In the 9th round, Witherspoon connected with several hard right hands that hurt Griffis and caused the referee to step in and halt the bout.

Griffis, 32, had his moments, too, tagging Witherspoon without any problems and making the fight competitive up until the time of the stoppage. The fight wasn't supposed to be close, however, because Witherspoon is thought to be potential future heavyweight champion by many boxing experts.
