DaVarryl Williamson stops Wheeler in 3rd round KO!

07.07.07 - By Jeff Bastasini: Heavyweight DaVarryl Williamson (24-4, 20 KOs) stopped Maurice Wheeler (10-10-1, 1 KOs) in the 3rd round on Friday night at the Florida State Fair grounds Hall, in Tampa, Florida. Williamson, the # 4th ranked heavyweight in the WBA, knocked the Southpaw Wheeler out with a big right hand shot in the 3rd. It had been a little over a year since Williamson had fought.

Williamson, 38, still, however, is in the thick of the heavyweight pack in the WBA, perhaps needing only one or two more victories to land a title shot. All this despite his poor showing in a 10-round decision lost to then IBF title holder Chris Byrd in October 2005, a bout that was marred by non-action by both fighters. Since then, Williamson had fought only once, demolishing a previously undefeated Mike Mollo in a 4th round TKO in May 6, 2006. Williamson still has impressive power in his right hand, as Wheeler, 36, will probably testify to, and is a dangerous opponent for anyone in the heavyweight division. However, he needs to step it up and avoid any further prolonged spells of inactivity if he wants to land a shot at the WBA title.
