Diaz throws out first pitch, sticks to boxing

11.05.04 - Julio “The Kidd” Diaz may never be mistaken for Roger Clemens or Pedro Martinez, but if he can’t throw a baseball as well as a Major Leaguer, he certainly can throw a punch with the best of them. The first fact, that Diaz had better stick to boxing, was determined Tuesday night when he threw out the first pitch at the San Diego Padres-Cincinnati Reds baseball game at Petco Park in San Diego. It was a good pitch, but not one likely to get him to the Show any time soon.

“The guys on my slo-pitch softball team in Palm Springs don’t believe that I’m throwing out the first pitch at a Padres game,” said the 24-year-old Diaz, who lives in nearby Coachella, Calif.

Diaz will be throwing better, harder and longer Thursday when he challenges International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Javier Jauregui in a 12-round title fight at the San Diego Sports Arena.

The eight-bout card, which will be televised live nationally on HBO Latino, is presented by Ringside Promotions By Sycuan and Golden Boy Promotions.

Diaz, ranked No. 1 by the IBF among 135-pounders, has a record of 29-2 with 22 knockouts while Jairegui, making his first title defense of the crown he won last November, has a mark of 47-10-2 with 34 knockouts.

“This is my time to prove myself,” said Diaz about his first world championship bout.

“I’m expecting a good fight,” said Jauregui. “We are both warriors. We both have the blood of warriors. Julio is in the same position I was when I was the No. 1 contender and then became champion. That will make this a great fight.”
