The 2008 Olympic Boxing Team Trials – Boxing Participants are Set at the 2007 U.S. Championships

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The 88 boxers competing in the 2008 Olympic Team Trials – Boxing were set on Tuesday at the 2007 U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs. Twenty-three Olympic hopefuls added their names to the participant list on Tuesday night with victories in second round action. Flyweight action opened the competition and Timothy Ibarra (Brighton, Colo.) enjoyed a Colorado advantage in his bout with Jorge Abiague (Portland, Maine). Ibarrra took the first lead, but Abiague pulled it to a tie at the midway point in the contest..

The score remained deadlocked as the fourth round began, but Ibarra managed to score one more point than Abiague in the bout determining round to win a 14-13 decision. Juan Leija (Alvin, Texas) pulled out a close decision as well, defeating 2006 U.S. Championships bronze medalist Louie Padilla (Las Vegas, Nev.).

2007 Golden Gloves silver medalist Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) earned his spot in the quarterfinal round with a 21-16 win over Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.). Williams took the small early lead, but Del Valle pulled it to a 13-13 tie at the end of three rounds. Yet Williams took control back in the final round, winning the fourth stanza to take the 21-16 final decision.

The upset of the day took place in the light welterweight division as 2006 Junior Olympic National Champion Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) mounted a late comeback to defeat two-time national champion Karl Dargan (Philadelphia, Pa.). Dargan held a 19-10 lead after two rounds, but Molina came charging right back. He pulled the bout to within four points as the final round began, and didn’t take his foot of the gas. Molina overtook Dargan in the fourth round, to win the 31-27 decision.

Fernando Guerrero (Salisbury, Md.) put a quick end to his bout with Donta Woods (Atlanta, Ga./NMU). Guerrero hit Woods with a strong uppercut at the 1:26 mark of the second round, flooring Woods and taking the stoppage win.

Heavyweight Quantis Graves (Cut Off, La.) pulled out a one-point victory over Jordan Shimmell (Hudsonville, Mich.). Shimmell took the first lead, but Graves took the advantage back over the final two round en route to winning a 12-11 final decision.
