Ibragimov shows support for De La Hoya in his bout against Mayweather
01.05.07 - By Izyaslav “Slava” Koza: WBO #1 contender Sultan Ibragimov, currently training for his June 2 title attempt in Atlantic city against WBO champ Shannon Briggs, weighed-in with his thoughts on the mega May 5th showdown between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. Co-promoted by De La Hoya and company, Sultan gave his brief estimation on the bout:

Sultan Ibragimov: Of course as with any fight you are personally not involved in it is hard to pick a winner. I would love for Oscar to win, although I have to admit that Floyd seems faster. However, the experience factor leans towards Oscar. I’ll watch the fight at home with some friends and my trainer (Sultan is trained by Jeff Mayweather, Floyd’s Uncle). He will be cheering for his nephew so it might create some sort of issue between us(laughing)..
(On whether Oscar will come to help support him and promote his fight after May 5th) Yes, he will probably attend the press conferences and show me support.
He is in training now so his focus is completely on his fight and so he does not let anything distract him, but before he began training he did call and tell me, “I believe in you and your abilities.” It would be a good motivator for me if he wins.
Though I am not cheering for him because of that. I am cheering for him because I know him as a person and therefore wish him the best.
Stay tuned for a more in depth interview with the “king of the Caucasus” next week and check out Mayweather vs De La Hoya this Saturday (not that I really have to tell most boxing fans to do so.)
