ROBERTO DURAN brings boxing to Miami

16.04.07 - Roberto Duran, in association with the Florida Boxing Promotions of Miami, presents a 7-bout professional boxing card at Miami’s Mahi Shrine Temple on May 2, featuring former jr. middleweight champion Yory Boy Campas vs. Miami’s Eromosele Albert in the 10-round main event. “I am proud to bring boxing fans in Miami a first-class boxing show,” said Duran from his home in Panama City, Panama. “I have been a promoter for 2 years now and I believe our group can do many shows in Miami featuring the top Latin boxers of today.” ..

Duran, with partner Luis DeCubas, promotes WBC lightweight champion Joel Casamayor and IBF super-middleweight champion Alejandro Barrio, as well as six other Latin boxers rated in the top 10 by the four major sanctioning bodies.

Campas, fighting out of Phoenix, Arizona, has an incredible record of 88-9 with 72 knockouts. In his last fight, he lost a close decision to John Duddy in New York in what named one of its 2006 Fights of the Year. Albert, a Nigerian native fighting out of Miami, is 19-1 with 9 knockouts and has won nine straight fights. Albert is trained by Orlando Cuellar, who guided Glen Johnson to a light-heavyweight title.

The 10-round co-feature has the WBC Latin Heavyweight title at stake, with Fres Oquendo of Puerto Rico taking on Damien Norris of Cuba. Oquendo (26-4, 16 KO’s), is coming off a controversial loss to former 4-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. Norris (9-2, 7 KO’s), is a 6-foot-5 former Cuban amateur star who trains in Las Vegas.

The undercard is studded with talent, including 2004 Venezuelan Olympic heavyweight Wilmer Vasquez (2-0 as a pro) and Puerto Rican featherweight twins Juan and Carlos Velasquez, both 1-0 as professionals.

The Mahi Temple is located at 1480 NW North River Drive in Miami. Duran will be in Miami for two weeks prior to the show and a press conference will be announced shortly.
