Australian Boxing News

31.03.05 - By Anton Williams: Anthony Mundine is currently sparing world light heavyweight contender Paul Briggs on the Gold Coast and has raised a few eyebrows by requesting the services of Manny Siaca ahead of his world title fight with Mikkel Kessler in Sydney on May 11th. Reports suggest that Mundine is training harder than ever and the last training session with Briggs was as brutal a sparring session as any in recent times. Shane Mosley, David Estrada, Angelo Dundee Interview Transcript

31.03.05 - Moretti: 8 fighters, 4 fights, 2 world title fights but no bigger name on the card than Shane Mosley. From a boxing point of view, Shane is returning to the welterweight division, which is probably his best division. I know he feels a lot more comfortable at 147. He痴 in with a real tough guy, David Estrada who is with Angelo Dundee. You can come back against a lot of guys after a loss but taking on someone like Estrada shows that Shane is ready to get right back into it. Fighting Estrada reflects that and what Shane has done his whole career.

Mosley: I知 in Big Bear training very hard and I知 ready to go.

Decision to move to welterweight?

Mosley: I wondered whether it would be a problem or not but right now I知 at 52. I知 pretty good, about 5 pounds away. When I fought my second fight with Winky I made the weight so easily I was at 154 two weeks before the fight. I was like 層ow. I feel a lot sharper and a lot faster in my workouts. If there was a weight class, 150 would be a great weight class for me but 147 with the smaller gloves is great for me. continue

Toney/Ruiz Press Conference Exercise in pointlessness

31.03.05 - By Tony Fondacaro: Footage of the James Toney-John Ruiz press conference is revealing in more ways than one. All the necessary players were there, each with their own flavorful patina, but you can稚 say that anything of significance was really transmitted. I致e read more than one online article stating how staged it looked, resembling the scripted action of professional wrestling. I wouldn稚 go so far as to say it was scripted, but I will say, perhaps someone should have handed a script to Ruiz and his trainer Norman Stone.

How bad do Ruiz and Stone look after that? When Ruiz took the podium, he couldn稚 stand in one place for longer than five seconds, he couldn稚 stop playing with the microphone, he couldn稚 complete a thought without stuttering and going back to his stand-by, 的知 the best right now. What exactly did John Ruiz say? Well if you kept score, he said he痴 the best right now, that you should all come to the fight, and that it痴 on. continue

Tszyu vs. Hatton: An early analysis

30.03.05 - By Darrell La Montre: When Kostya 典hunder from Down Under Tszyu (31-1 25 ko痴) squares off against Ricky 滴itman Hatton on June 5th at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England fistic fireworks will be on display. Don稚 be fooled by Hatton痴 corpulent appearance when recently interviewed on Showtime Champion Boxing, come fight time he will be in tip top shape and ready to rumble. Tszyu, of course will be as well, and if you couple that with their aggressive, exciting style of fighting we are in for quite an interesting fight.

It will be interesting to see how Tszyu (a pressure fighter himself) deals with the suffocating pressure that Hatton will apply at times. Also, it will be interesting to see how well Tszyu is able to take the body punches that Hatton will be administering throughout the fight. It will be crucial for Ricky to land some good, hard body shots early on Tszyu in order to zap some energy from him, and take some starch off his punches. Tszyu himself is an excellent body puncher, and it will be equally interesting to see how well Hatton is able to absorb the body attack that Kostya will administer on him. continue

James Toney vs John Ruiz: "Turning Point" hits the boiling point at MSG

30.03.05 - By Mike Indri, Retired Boxers Foundation: James Toney, the three-time world champion and future hall-of-famer, made his first trip to Madison Square Garden an unforgettable one. Unforgettable, yes - but worth remembering, no!

James Toney met with the media today at Madison Square Garden to kick off the Don King promoted "Turning Point" heavyweight championship showdown between the mandatory challenger Toney (68-4-2, 43 KO's), and the World Boxing Association Champion John Ruiz (41-5-1, with 28 KO's). While making his grand entrance adorned in a highly fashionable fur coat, on this fair weathered spring day, and sporting enough bling to make even Elizabeth Taylor proud, Toney's excerpts were true gems.

"He (Ruiz) can do this the easy way or the hard way," guipped the Detroit native. "Easy way - I knock him out quick. Hard way - I bust him up, bleeding all over, TKO - either way I knock him out!" Toney was no where near finished, "You can tell him I said that too - James Toney is going to knock out John Ruiz, When I land a flush punch - it's over." continue

Sharkie's Machine: Fernando 'Not So Ferocious' Vargas

29.03.05 - By Frank Gonzalez Jr.: After HBO replayed the highly entertaining war between Erik Morales and Manny Pacquaio, they shifted into a pre-fight interview with Fernando Vargas, who was the featured fighter of the evening. During that interview, Vargas talked about his back problem and how he decided against surgery in favor rebuilding himself with a new conditioning coach and regime. He talked about being a warrior and about how he wants his children to see him. He couldn't hold back his tears as he teetered on the recognition that if things didn't go well in the ring, that this could be the end of his boxing career.

Boxing is an emotional sport. Stamina, punching power, defense, ring generalship and athleticism are the ingredients but the thing that makes those elements work together is confidence. It's the invisible thing that raises or sinks a fighter's spirit in the ring.

Saturday night in Corpus Christi Texas, Fernando "El Feroz" Vargas (25-2-0-22 KO's) made his cautious return to the ring after a fifteen-month layoff. He entered the ring weighing 169 pounds to face the soft punching, Ray Joval (33-4-0-15 KO's). Joval's pressure and volume of punches kept it a fight but it wasn't much to look at. Especially after re-watching Pacman battle Morales for 12 action packed rounds. continue

Fernando Vargas: Resurgence, Or Last Gasp

28.03.05 - By Matthew Hurley: On March 26th Fernando Vargas returned to the ring in front of an adoring, capacity crowd against non-descript Ray Joval in an attempt to get his stalled career back on track. Vargas had been laid up for fifteen months with a bad back and had opted against surgery on a bulging disk in hopes that he could regain his past championship caliber form. His first fight on the comeback trail was as a full fledged middleweight and though he won a clear cut ten round decision the result did not answer all the questions being asked about his latest return to the ring.

From the opening bell it was obvious that Fernando was determined to employ a more technical approach. Instead of immediately slinging his best punch, the left hook to the body, he tried to establish his jab and, perhaps ironically, he adopted the tuck and roll defense his nemesis Oscar De La Hoya used against him in their bout. Whenever Joval attacked, Vargas dropped his left, tucked his chin behind his left shoulder, held his right fist tightly against his chin and rolled his body backwards at an angle. The ploy worked against the light hitting Joval but the tall, lanky middleweight was still able to walk through everything Vargas threw back at him in return and kept the bout relatively interesting. continue

Bring back the 15-round championship limit

26.03.05 - By JE: Want to bring championships back to prominent events? Bring back 15-round limits for championship bouts. The shift to 12-rounders started as a knee-jerk response to the death of Korean lightweight Deuk-Koo Kim following his 14th round knockout loss to then-WBA champion Ray 釘oom Boom Mancini, November 13, 1982.

The WBC, in an effort to appear to be considered progressive, quickly decreed that all of WBC world title bouts would be set for 12-rounds. For a short time after that the WBA and IBF maintained the 15-round limit, but like sheep eventually followed suit. When the plethora of other organizations such as the WBO, WBU, IBA etc (ad nauseam) came into being, the 12-round limit was seen as the norm. (As an aside, it is ironic that Mancini went on to lose his WBA lightweight title to Livingstone Bramble by way of 14-round knockout and later lost a 15-round decision in their rematch). continue

Will 腺ad Intentions be enough to finish Hopkins?

25.03.05 - By Ronny Soto: After months of speculation of whether or not Hopkins vs. Taylor was ever going to happen we finally have a confirmation from both camps that they have come to terms. After Hopkins having earlier imposed a 24 hr deadline for Taylor to accept the original terms, which were: $1.5M and options on Taylor's next 3 fights; It is reported that HBO added some money to the pot increasing Taylor痴 purse to $1.8M and Hopkins to $3M, and that's without options on Taylor's future fights. The possible date for the match-up is July 16 in either in Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

This leads us to one question: Can Taylor do what no one has been able to do for the past 12 years and that's beat Hopkins. Coming into the ring he is a bronze medalist having an undefeated record and the title of "heir apparent"; that is when Hopkins retires at the end of this year most expect him to be the dominant force in the middleweight division.

Hopkins has not lost a fight since he met Roy Jones Jr. in 1993. He holds titles in 3 of boxing's most recognized boxing organizations: Four, if you count the IBF belt he's relinquishing in order to fight Taylor instead of his mandatory Sam Soliman. continue

Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker: Worth a Million

25.03.05 - By Bernie McCoy: Shortly before his death, someone asked Albert Einstein what weapons would be used in World War III. The old man thought for a moment and then said he didn't know, but World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones. Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker won't be bringing sticks and stones into the Staples Center ring on July 9, but the type of primal combat that the old professor had in mind for WW IV will surely be present. continue

25.03.05 - By Mike Indri, Retired Boxers Foundation: Arturo Gatti (photo: Tom Casino) has been called many things; a warrior, the franchise, the human highlight reel, boxing痴 pound-for-pound most exciting fighter, thunder, world champion, - you get the idea. No one has ever called Arturo Gatti a "bum"; that was until yesterday.

"I知 going to punish him (Gatti), step on him, in his own backyard," roared undefeated, two-time world champion "Flamboyant Floyd" Mayweather during yesterday痴 press conference at New York痴 popular Copacabana restaurant. April 23rd ESPN PPV Is Just What Boxing Needs

24.03.05 - By Darrell La Montre: On April 23rd, ESPN will be holding its first pay-per-view fight card at a very reasonably priced $29.95. Not only is the price of this pay-per-view appealing to boxing fans/consumers, but there is a huge qualitative disparity in regards to the fights being offered on this card, as opposed to most of the previous pay-per-views that have been priced at astronomical fees of up to $54.95. We致e grown so accustomed to coughing up fifty bucks for essentially one potential good fight, and having to sit through the undercard fights that should be sponsored by Nyquil.

Once in a while they値l feature a potentially great upcoming fighter against a pathetically overmatched foe, producing an exciting knockout. Normally, however, those kinds of fights/fighters are featured on regular HBO or Showtime. Then, after they致e gotten to championship level, they become the main event on one of those high priced Pay-Per-Views that I alluded to earlier, supported by weak, boring fights. continue

What Really Happened To Juan Carlos Gomez In America?

23.03.05 - By Wray Edwards: When the former, undefeated Cruiserweight Champion of the world Juan Carlos Gomez came to America at age 27 after leaving his European career with Universum behind, his prospects were ostensibly bright. The Cuban exile痴 32 KO record, out of some 37 fights, was built by defeating good to top-notch opponents in the no-man痴 land of cruiser competition. His entre to the west was under the management of Leon Margules and Louis De Cubas 典eam Freedom, so-named due to its majority compliment of fighters who had defected from communist or despotic nations.

Juan痴 arrival in the USA was the beginning of a series of events which were bizarre, to say the least, and precipitated a rash of lawsuits and litigations which continue to this day. Parts of this saga read like an international spy novel with secret agents, behind-the-scenes machinations and nefarious attempts by third parties to undermine Carlos American career and associations. continue

Vivian Harris Interview: "I'll Fight Cotto for $50,000!"

22.03.05 - By Scoop Malinowski / Highly regarded WBA Junior Welterweight champ Vivian Harris has seen three of his mandatories back down from title shot opportunities. Yes, it is hard to believe but Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather were all WBA mandatories at one point yet they each elected to turn down a world title fight, presumably for easier, safer engagements.

That fact right there tells you just how good and how respected a champion Vivian Harris of New York via Guyana truly is. Here's the latest from one of boxing's most talented, dangerous and outspokenly fascinating world champions:

Erik Morales Another Classic

22.03.05 - By Matt Hurley: It was the twelfth and final round of yet another wonderful fight in a career filled with exceptional moments and Erik Morales sneered at convention. He was ahead, he had turned southpaw at the end of rounds ten and eleven and clubbed Manny Pacquiao with right hands, but it was a dangerous move against a dangerous southpaw opponent. His corner men, his father, begged him to be cautious. The fight was in the bag. Erik nodded, walked to center ring, tapped gloves with his foe and basically stuck his chin out and said, 塗it me.

敵o ahead, he seemed to be saying. 滴it me with everything you致e got. You can稚 beat me. To prove it he once again switched to the unorthodox style and got cracked on the chin immediately. He didn稚 care. Inexplicably, he remained in the left handed stance, taking punches and losing the round, if only to prove his toughness to everyone who doubted him including his southpaw opponent. That痴 Erik Morales. That痴 why his fans adore him. That痴 what confounds his critics even when they cheer his bravado. Erik Morales fights for the sport of boxing itself. He always has, he always will and until he is carried out on his shield he will refuse to fight on anyone痴 terms other than his own. continue

Sharkie's Machine: Morales Conquers Pacquaio

21.03.05 - By Frank Gonzalez Jr.: Living legend and Tijuana native, Erik "El Terrible" Morales upped his record to 48-2-0-34 KO's on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where as the underdog, he faced dangerous rising Philippine Star, Manny "PacMan" Pacquaio (39-3-2-30 KO's) in a Super Featherweight match up of epic proportions. Morales was insulted by the odds. But the odds makers were wrong.

Manny Pacquaio has been on a mission. In November of 2003, he beat up on Marco Antonio Barrera so badly that Barrera's corner threw in the towel to make it a TKO 11 victory for Pacman. That shocked the boxing world.

Pacquaio's management has had an aggressive agenda and the Barrera fight was just the start of a tour that would include J.M. Marquez (WBA and IBF FW Champion) and Erik Morales, the three most notable Featherweights in the world.

Pacquaio's memorable battle (in May of 2004) against J.M. Marquez featured Marquez going down three times in the first round from devastating power punches. But, Marquez got up and out boxed Pacman well enough for the remaining rounds that it was officially decided as a (controversial) Draw. continue

Has Ricky Hatton Bitten Off More Than He Can Chew?

20.03.05 - By Phydos Sergiou: Forget the heavyweight division; the 140 pound division is where it痴 at! There are at least 7 Superb Fighters vying for the number one Kosta Tszyu痴 number #1 spot in 2005, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Vivian Harris, Aturo Gatti, Floyd Mayweather, and with Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga announcing that they to want to come back down to 140 pounds this is the strongest division of them all. I will be discussing the other fighters in another article, but for now lets concentrate on the upcoming fight between Tszyu and Hatton.

Tszyu has one of the most extensive and impressive amateur resumes in boxing, and to top that he is a two-time world champion and now undisputed light welterweight champion (although he does not hold all the belts), and with good reason. His punching power is the most potent in the division and definitely in the top 3 pound 4 pound fighters in the world right now. From the Interview 的gor Ruzhnikov: 的 had much tougher opponents than Roy Jones.
Life is a hard thing. Very often in the arts, in a movie for example, an actor becomes a hostage of a single performed role. The list of actors who have suffered such a bitter sweet fate, is longer then the longest football field, and farther then the farthest star. For instance, even in music, if somebody were to ask a bystander on the street to name two popular Eagle痴 songs, besides 滴otel California, you would unlikely hear a further response, and even though that is usually how life unfolds, doesn稚 it seem just unfair? continue

Will The Morales Magic Curse Pacquiao?

17.03.05 - By Jim Amato: The day the bout between Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao was announced I just felt that Erik was going to come out on top. Why ? At that time I'm not sure. Just a gut feeling I guess. I knew that Erik had just lost a legitimate decision to Marco Antonio Barrera. I knew that Manny had nearly put Juan Marquez out early and then had to settle for a disputed draw. I remembered how Manny had so savagely taken apart Barrera and stopped him. With all that on the plate it would seem most logical to pick Manny to defeat Morales. Still my immediate reaction was to choose Morales as the probable winner.

It has been several weeks and I have had ample time to reconsider my decision. Guess what ? I still feel the same way. Here's why. Pacquiao's a fast starter. He may be the quicker handed and harder puncher. With all this considered the first few rounds will be very tough for Erik. continue

Joe Calzaghe: A Bleak Future?

16.03.05 - By Don Caputo: Is he the premier super middleweight in the world? Maybe, maybe not. Whatever your opinion of him good, bad or ugly Welshmen Joe Calzaghe is certainly one of the leading candidates for that particular distinction. Sadly though, he is not a fixture on that short list primarily through his own merits and accomplishments (as he should be), but rather by default; for Calzaghe ply痴 his trade in a division that has long been devoid of big name talent. I say 壮adly with genuine feeling because he is a fighter who I believe is oozing with talent and potential, yet for whatever reason has been seemingly stuck in the same gear for a frustrating length of time. If anything, the caliber of his competition has significantly regressed in recent years; the Calzaghe story has turned out to be the epitome of 双ne step forwards, two steps back.

Whenever the WBO(gus) champion appears to be gathering any kind of positive momentum, he in a sense stutters or breaks down two minutes or so down the road. Highs are immediately followed by lengthy lulls, a pattern that has proved severely non-conducive to the Calzaghe cause. It痴 hurting him. He just hasn稚 sustained anything on a legitimate world class plane, which may sound somewhat harsh but I知 afraid his aesthetically impressive yet hollow resume speaks volumes. continue

Taurus Sykes Challenges Guinn and Peter

16.03.05 - Fresh of off his dominate performance over Friday Ahunanya in Hobbs, NM to pick up the NABA Heavyweight title Taurus "the Bull" Sykes is now ready for bigger and better challenges. The NABA champion, who also has the heart of a champion, is concerned by the fact that a so-called heavyweight contender, by the name of Dominick Guinn, is acting more like a pretender as he has chose to fight the loser of the bout, Friday Ahunanya, on ESPN, instead of trying to fight the winner. continue

Sharkie's Machine: Thoughts About Manny Pacquiao vs Erik Morales

16.03.05 - By Frank Gonzalez Jr.: After watching, "The Contender" on Sunday, I'm ready for some REAL boxing. "The Contender" has some potential but it makes the same mistake Oscar De La Hoya's boxing program (that aired last year) made; they only show 15 second snippets of each round. The program focuses more on non-boxing competitions and interactions instead of duke outs in the square circle.

I'm thinking about this Saturday's showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Tijuana native, Erik Morales, complete with a scheduled 12 rounds of three uninterrupted minutes of pugilism per round. But I doubt this fight goes the distance.

There is a school of thought vested in the logic that, if Pacquiao beat Barrera and Barrera beat Morales, then Morales cannot beat Pacquiao. Not necessarily so. In Football, they say, "On any given Sunday." Well, the same applies in boxing. After all, Morales destroyed Junior Jones (by TKO 4), the man who beat Barrera twice, though eventually, Barrera would win twice over Morales, (though the first win was controversial). The past has no place in the present outside of reference points. When the best face each other, anything can happen. continue

Current Champs prove old isn't old anymore!

15.03.05 - By Darrell La Montre: I recall watching a fight on HBO back when George Foreman was the expert commentator, and Arthur Mercante Sr. was still active as a referee. Earlier in the telecast Jim Lampley had commented that Mercante had just turned eighty. Subsequent to that revelation, while observing Mercante痴 age defying alertness, Foreman said (and I知 paraphrasing) 鏑ook at that eighty year old ref --he痴 so alert and lively!! Old ain稚 old anymore. The same can be said of many of today痴 best fighters.

In 2005, old really isn稚 old anymore. It used to be that once a fighter reached the age of 30, he was widely considered to be 都hot, 努ashed-up, a 塗as-been, etc. Thanks to modern technology, nutrition, training, and advancements in medicine, today痴 30 is yesterday痴 25. continue

Thoughts on Upcoming Heavyweight Fights

13.03.05 - By Izyaslav 鉄lava Koza - In the last few days the Heavyweight division has gone through a roller-coaster loop of negotiations involving big fights, and even bigger fighters. We have now pretty much realized that Chris Byrd is a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to saying one thing and doing a completely different one (to set the record straight, I don稚 blame him for making the right 澱usiness decision, but I hate hearing crap about making the fights fans want to see, and then making ones they won稚 care about). Since so many of these fights will be happening in the future, as opposed to at least one year ago when Lewis retired and when they should have taken place, I wanted to give my thoughts on each one:

Vitali Klitschko vs. Hasim Rahman:

With Vitali痴 recent injury, this fight will be delayed at least a month or two. However, it will still be happening and it will be pure dynamite to watch. When Vitali chose to fight Danny Williams last December, many critics jumped on him for choosing a 都oft opponent. continue

Fight Fans Miss A Real Treat: Klitschko-Rahman Off

13.03.05 - By Chris Ireland - The latest news out of Team Klitschko is Vitali Klitschko, WBC heavyweight champion, will not be defending his title against Hasim Rahman due to injury. According to ESPN, Klitschko pulled a muscle in his upper thigh while jogging on Friday night in chilly, Kiev, Ukraine. The injury will keep Vitali away from training for at least 3 weeks. The April 30th scrap, scheduled to air on HBO, was to be on of the many highly anticipated match-ups during boxing's boom season. The injury sustained by the champion has yet to be announced. Go figure.

Klitschko-Rahman wasn't to be the second coming of Bowe-Holyfield or Ali-Frazier, didn't have the big event atmosphere of Tyson-Lewis or Holmes-Cooney, and sure as heck wasn't a prospect to save the heavyweight division, but it certainly was to be an improvement from some of the other "title" fights that fans have been force-fed. In one corner there was the towering Klitschko, a determined, entertaining powerhouse looking to protect his crown. In the other corner there was the always unpredictable Rahman, the former heavyweight champion looking to recapture gold and continue his unlikely resurgence. continue

Analysis: Morales-Pacquiao

12.03.05 - By Darrell La Montre: The upcoming fight between Manny 撤acman Pacquiao (39-2-2, 31 ko痴) and Erik 摘l Terrible Morales (47-2, 34 ko痴) has the potential to be a war. It may not be a pugilistic Vietnam, but it could be quite a donnybrook. A lot depends on Morales, and whether he elects to box or brawl the Filipino firecracker. In my opinion, it would be almost suicidal for Morales to fight Pacquiao the same way he fought Barrera. continue

Vitali Klitschko vs Hasim Rahman: A repeat of Williams?

10.03.05 - By Brad D. - There is much talk going on in the forums about the Vitali Klitschko vs. Hasim Rahman fight. This fight is finally a go as of yesterday, that is unless something huge changes, or someone gets injured. This fight will take place April 30th on HBO World Championship Boxing.

Many of the topics in the forums include statements like Rahman knocked out Lewis, he can knock out Vitali, and Vitali will treat Rahman like he did Williams. Let me address the Rahman/Lewis angle. Lennox Lewis came into the Rahman fight totally lethargic, out of shape, and careless. It was apparent in the first round to me that Lewis was in trouble. That accompanied by the smiles, and you knew he was about to eat canvas. continue

Is Byrd In Hiding?

10.03.05 - By Scoop Malinowski: "A coward is a coward is a coward." Now that it is out in the open that Chris Byrd does not have to go to Germany to fight Wladimir Klitschko for $3.5 million and that he's been offered his contracted minimum of $2.5 million to face the Ukrainian on home turf in America, what more excuses can this so-called champion come up with next?

The apparent latest in the long charade of excuses by Byrd is that he wants Don King to pay $250,000 to some co-promoter named Bill Kozerski. But the way Byrd has bait-and-switched with all his excuses not to fight Wladimir Klitschko, you know once this demand is met, he'll most likely contrive some more new smokescreens. To disguise the truth that everyone knows now. continue

Rahman-Klitschko set for April 30th

09.03.05 - By Jeff Bastasini: Well, it now appears that former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (40-5-1, 33 KO痴) will meet with WBC Heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on April 30th at New York痴 Madison Square Garden. Promoter Don King told ESPN yesterday 溺onte (Barrett) was in but, Rahman has now agreed to the fight. I think he talked to HBO and found out that I wasn稚 hiding any money. Previous to agreeing to the fight, Monte Barrett, who is # 3 in the WBC, was stepping in to replace Rahman as an opponent for Klitschko.

Rahman had filed a request last week that the WBC order a purse bid in which other promoters could propose a dollar amount to be divided between the two fighters. However, Rahman found out from WBC president Jose Sulaiman that Klitschko not only had until June 1 to begin negotiations, but that he could make an optional defense, which means that Klitschko (35-2, 34 KO痴) wouldn稚 have to face Rahman until September. This was a good fight. Williams and Lacy (photo: Tom Casino/Showtime) were battling from start to finish. Williams had some good moments but he failed to make adjustments, like staying off the ropes, and he fell prey to Lacy's volume and power.

The six foot, two inch tall Williams was effective when he boxed from the outside, where he popped Lacy with his jab, followed by right hands that gave a good account of himself. At times, he utilized his height and reach advantage, but not always. continue

Even boxing痴 most prolific writers have chimed in their two cents on this raging debate. I don稚 consider myself to be one of them, but I知 compelled to join in on the festivities anyway. I, as most frequent visitors of this great site already know, have a dissenting opinion of the man and his supposed 塗all of fame career. It is my firm belief that Bernard Hopkins has been the beneficiary of shrewd matchmaking.

As a direct result of this, an unsuspecting victim dwells among us. The million-dollar question, and you get all of the marbles if you can answer it, is just who is this victim to which the author is referring? Heavyweight Farce: Does Wlad Klitschko Deserve A Title Shot?

02.03.05 - By Umar ben-Ivan Lee: There has been a lot of talk lately about why Chris Byrd seemingly does not want to fight Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF title and lost in this conversation has been some key facts.

In his last four fights W. Klitschko has been knocked out twice, knocked out a journeyman, and struggled mightily with a suspect DaVarryl Williamson. A Second Look at Jess Willard

Each fighter is left with a legacy, however great or small. With this legacy, comes a label that places the champion in the annals of boxing history. Some are known for their power, some for their speed, but in the end boxing historians label all these fighters off their prowess in the ring.

In this instance, many champions do not receive the acclaim they deserve, because at some point their talent was overshadowed by the exposing of an unforgivable flaw in the squared circle. One such champion, was the 撤ottawatomie Giant, Jess Willard. continue

01.03.05 - By Alton Silverman: On Saturday, February 26, Dariusz the Tiger Michalczewski tasted defeat in the truest sense of the word in the form of a sixth round TKO at the hands of the reigning WBA Light Heavyweight champion, Fabrice Tiozzo. It marked the end of dominance for the old guard of the Light Heavyweight division, as both the former linear light heavyweight champion Michalczewski and his arch rival Roy Jones Jr. have now been stopped in convincing fashion. The career of Dariusz Michalczewski is an interesting one because it represents boxing on the world scene.

With the fall of the Soviet Union and the expulsion of Communism from its satellite states, the now united Europe has gathered a lot of strength on the world boxing scene. In fact, both Michalczewski and Tiozzo received a much higher payday in their fight than the top American Light Heavyweights, Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, did in theirs; outside of the heavyweight division, it appears boxing has now truly gone from the American stage to the world, and Michalczewski痴 career is just another testament to this extravagant transformation. continue
