Yoan Pablo Hernandez defends IBF title on Saturday against Steve Cunningham in Germany

International Boxing Federation (IBF) Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (25-1, 13 KOs) will face two-time world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (24-3, 12 KOs) in a hotly-anticipated rematch in Frankfurt on Saturday night. Boxing-online.com has caught up with the 27-year-old Cuban.

Q: Yoan Pablo, you will be facing Steve Cunningham for the second time on Saturday. Are you upset about giving him a rematch?

YPH: “No, not at all, much on the contrary. I am happy to fight him again. I will show everybody that I am the better fighter. If there are any doubts, I will erase them.”

Q: The first fight came to a controversial ending. Cunningham believes you could have fought on despite the cuts. What´s your take on that?

YPH: “Well, it wasn´t me who stopped the fight, but the referee after consulting the ring doctor. One of the cuts was very deep, the risk of getting a serious injury would have been too big in my opinion. And the blood was affecting my vision. Who knows what could have happened.”

Q: Are you upset about the fact that everybody discussed the ending of the fight? After all, you knocked him down in the first round…

YPH: “Of course I was upset. I performed well on that night and I deserved to win. Everybody should respect that. Cunningham should have respected that, too.”

Q: How will the second fight go?

YPH: “I hope it will not be as bloody as the first fight. I hope for a fair fight – I will be fighting fair. It´s my goal to win the rematch and put an end to the discussions about the first fight.”

Q: Has your life changed after winning the world title?

YPH: “Not really. I am the same person I was before. But when walking around in Berlin, I get recognized by more fans.”

Q: If you win on February 4, what will be next for you?

YPH: “I will take some time off. Every athlete needs breaks. I have trained very hard in the past months and I just want to spend some time with my family. Then I will quickly return to training for my next fight. But I am not thinking that far ahead. All that matters now is the rematch against Cunningham on Saturday.”

Hot Prospect Travis Peterkin remains undefeated

New York (January 30, 2012) – This past Saturday at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, Boxing360’s light heavyweight prospect, “The Notorious” Travis Peterkin (4-0, 3 KOs) remained undefeated, winning a unanimous decision with the scorecards reading 40-36 across the board.

After recording three consecutive first round knockouts to start of his career, Peterkin, who faced Steve Tyner (2-3-1, 2 KOs) in a four round bout, went the distance for the first time, dominating the action from the opening bell.

Peterkin who fights out of Brooklyn, NY went on to say, “It was defiantly a good win for me but I feel I could have done better. Tyner was a step up but I fought smart and came out with the victory. I’m healthy and I’m ready to go right into my next fight. I’m looking forward to seeing what Boixng360 has lined up for me. I’m excited about 2012.”

Trainer Bernard Peterkin said, “I feel it was a good victory for Travis. He hasn’t been past the first round in two years since the amateurs. He showed great poise versus a guy who shatters dreams for prospects. Travis is young and that four round experience is something he’s never experienced in 104 bouts as an amateur. He’s with the big boys now and we expect that.”

Boxing360 promoter Mario Yagobi was happy with the result stating, “Peterkin showed he can go rounds if need be. In this sport you can’t always knock everyone out early. The experience gained from this fight is great for Travis and I know he learned a few things in the process. I want to get him back in the ring as soon as possible.”

This bout was promoted by Boxing360 in association with the Turning Stone Resort & Casino. For more information please visit www.boxing360.com.

Gunn Breaks Silence: “Our Time Is Now Roy…let’s Make this Fight Happen”

Former IBA Cruiserweight Champion and current World Heavyweight Bare Knuckle Boxing Champion Bobby Gunn has patiently waited for a response from Roy Jones Jr.’s team following Jones’ announcement last week on a live boxing radio show that he will fight Gunn next.

There have been no moves forward about Jones fighting David Haye or Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, and Gunn spoke out to urge Jones’ team to make this fight happen.

Bobby Gunn:

“Roy, I truly do wish you the best success, but I got to thinking, and in order for you to really get the big, big fights, you have to have a spectacular performance; the same goes for me. You are not going to get a world title fight by winning another 10 rounded lopsided sparring session. It isn’t about if you win or lose Roy; it is about how you are remembered and that you left it all in the ring. You don’t want to be remembered for the Danny Greene fiasco, just as I don’t want to be remembered for some of the fight fiasco’s I have been involved in. We have the chance to deliver to the boxing world a spectacular cruiserweight super fight.

Give boxing fans a glimpse of the Roy Jones Jr. they remember from the countless highlight reels. I can promise a war; we can put on the Sugar Ray Robinson/Jake LaMotta super fight of the 2000s. That is the expectation of the cruiserweight super fight we would put on.

We both need this fight to open the door to bigger things. You are an all-time great, one of the greatest fighters that have ever stepped between the ropes. Every Batman needs a Joker, just as every hero needs the villain. Let’s go to battle and let the fans decide who the hero is and who the villain is.

Right now the cruiserweight division is a dead issue. There isn’t much excitement. For us it is no longer about titles…there are too many titles in boxing. It’s about a super fight to put the cruiserweight division back on the boxing map. You are a boxing elite, Roy. “Jones vs. Gunn” is a fight boxing fans will remember.

My brother, my team has contacted your team; you have my information. Let’s make this fight right here in the Mecca of boxing—New York City. Let’s give boxing fans something they will remember. Right now there aren’t too many great fights out there for us; but me and you together make something that will be remembered.

Roy, make this fight happen.

Let’s fight, let’s do it like they used to do it in the old days. Let’s not get caught up in the boxing politics and circus and all the BS titles…let’s fight to fight and give the fans something to get excited about.

I have a great team, and a top attorney ready to make this fight happen. Brother, this isn’t complicated. This can be a slam dunk deal made within a few hours, and with one phone call. You know where I stand. Let’s make this fight happen.”
