Povetkin amused by Tyson Fury challenge; Calderon decisions Rivas; Vazquez Jr. destroys Leyva; Vassell not avoiding Purdy

WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 16 KOs) has laughed off the comments from Tyson Fury (16-0, 11 KOs), who most recently claimed he was ready to “take Povetkin out.” The 32-year-old Russian makes a first defence of his title at Helsinki´s renowned Hartwall Areena on December 3, taking on tough American challenger Cedric Boswell (35-1, 26 KOs). Povetkin was amused by Fury´s remarks. “I am ready to defend my belt against every challenger out there,” he stated. “But I must admit I am not overly scared by comments from someone whose biggest hit to date has been a Youtube video where he punches himself in the face. Right now all my focus is on Cedric Boswell.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland added: “We would love to make that fight and I had offered them the December date but they didn’t seem to fancy it too much so perhaps now we can discuss next spring. First Alexander needs to take care of a very tough challenger in Cedric Boswell.”

VASSELL NOT DUCKING PURDY

DENTON VASSELL’S camp insist they will give Lee Purdy a rematch and beat him for the second time.

Vassell was named as mandatory contender for Purdy’s British title, but the Manchester banker decided to make a Commonwealth title defence instead of facing his old rival.

The 27-year-old will make the second defence of his crown against Cameroon born Australian Samuel Colomban at Oldham Sport Centre on Saturday November 12.

Unbeaten Vassell won the Commonwealth crown when he outpointed Purdy back in April 2010.

Denton’s trainer Bob Shannon said: “Hopefully he’ll fight Purdy in the New Year now.

“We didn’t take it this time, but we’re not running away. We will fight him again and beat him again.”

Shannon has warned Vassell that Colomban is a serious threat adding: “Denton is looking very strong right now, but he has got to.

“This kid is a very strong kid and similar to Denton – comes forward and is a very big puncher. This is a very big test.”
