James Kirkland-Alfredo Angulo Signed And Sealed For Nov. 5th In Mexico – Bombs Away!

By James Slater: Fans who love a slugfest could be in for a real treat come November 5th, as light-middleweight sluggers James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo will meet in a scheduled 12-rounder in Cancun, Mexico. HBO will televise.

This potentially thrilling shootout has been in the works for a few weeks, but yesterday, on his Twitter page, Dan Rafael of ESPN.com wrote how Richard Schaefer had informed him the fight was signed. Of added excitement, the under-card for the show will feature unbeaten middleweight contender Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, 25-0(19) going up against Craig McEwan, 19-1(10) in an IBF eliminator.

It is the main event that has the fans most pumped up, though!

Can Kirkland, 29-1(26) rebound from the shocking loss he suffered at the hands of the relatively light-punching Nobuhiro Ishida? Can “The Mandingo Warrior” take Angulo’s bombs and vice versa? Will Angulo, 20-1(17) be able to cope with Kirkland’s southpaw stance? (James’ trainer Ann Wolfe says no).

Most fans do not expect this one to go to the middle rounds, let alone the later rounds. Someone will fall, the thinking goes; maybe even both men. Indeed, it would be no surprise at all if both men tasted the canvas in this guaranteed barnburner. Chin-wise, Angulo, the older man by two years at age 29, looks to have the upper hand. Never stopped and having taken some great shots in his career, Angulo is as tough as they come. Earlier in his career, Kirkland also showed a good beard, walking through some killer shots from the likes of Joel Julio and Eromosele Albert. The shock, 1st-round, three-knockdown loss to Ishida shook up Kirkland and his fans, though.

Can Kirkland, now back with trainer Wolfe, regain his old, pre-prison form? If he can, Angulo could be in for the fight of his life. If, however, the same Kirkland who faced Ishida enters the ring in Mexico a little over a month from now, it will be “El Perro’s” night.

Don’t blink when that opening bell rings on November 5th!
