Mundine and Green make it official

31.01.06 – By Gavin Stone: Australian super middleweights Anthony Mundine and Danny Green will have their long-awaited fight at Sydney’s Aussie Stadium (Sydney Football Staduim) on April 19th. Promoters are billing the encounter as the biggest fight in Australian boxing history and are expecting a crowd of more than 40,000 people..

The two rivals again avoided each other at Tuesday’s fight announcement held at the venue, holding separate press conferences, as they did in their December 11 double header last year.

Green stated that he will be heading to the United States for 2 weeks of sparring. While Mundine will head to his fathers birthplace for 4 weeks in Nothern New South Wales to prepere for the biggest fight of his career.

Mundine(25-3), who was wearing a white suit at todays announcment, is very confident of victory over his rival countryman.

I’m going to cut him up, they’re going call me the surgeon after this fight!” Mundine said.

Mundine was also very excited about the fight finally happening after years of bickering between the two camps.

“It’s going to be one of the biggest events in Australian history, if not the biggest, and I just want to give the fans a great show, a great night, and a great boxing exhibition,” he said.

Meanwhile, Green(21-2) said he was looking forward to getting on with his preparation for what will be his first fight on Australian soil against a Top 10 fighter.

“Professionally we have our differences and we’ve had a lot to say in the past. I’m just happy that we’ve finally set a date and a venue and the fight’s going to be on,” he said.

“It’s a sporting rivalry that Anthony and I have. Anything that Choc says to me I don’t take it personal.

“I don’t think he takes anything I say to him personally either. It is a great sporting rivalry. He thinks he can win, I think I can win. That’s what makes it exciting.”

Tickets will go on sale at Ticketek outlets from Wednesday, February 22. Priority purchase for Gold Members will be available from Wednesday, February 15.

SCG Trust Chief Executive, Mr Jamie Barkley, said securing the fight was a coup.

“This fight has massive national and international appeal and the promoters believe Aussie Stadium is the best venue and will provide a magnificent atmosphere,” he said.

Boxa Promotions Khoder Nasser said the Mundine-Green fight would stop the nation.

“Anthony looks at this fight as more important to him than any other fight he has ever fought, and that can only be of benefit to the Australian public,” he said. “The Australian public want to see this fight more than other fight.”

Mundine is rated 5 and Green 6 on the universally recognised The Ring world rankings.
