Scott Quigg Still Believes Frampton Fight Can Happen

On July 18th WBA (reg) 122 lb champion Scott Quigg goes into what will be a fight for comparative purposes when he takes on Spain’s Kiko Martinez in Manchester.

Bitter rival Carl Frampton boxed and beat Martinez twice – the first time in 2013 by 9th round stoppage and then again 18 months later by unanimous decision, to take the IBF 122 lb strap the Northern Irishman currently owns.

Negotiations for a fight between the two Brits recently broke down, with Frampton going on to sign with seemingly omnipotent ‘advisor’ Al Haymon – “The Jackal” is now set to face Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in Texas on the same July 18th date Quigg fights.

Frampton yesterday penned an article in “The Sunday Life” in which he attempted to clarify just what caused the talks to break down – (essentially, but not exclusively, financial minutiae) – and in spite of these comments and what went on behind closed doors, Quigg himself is still confident the fight can take place in the future, telling fighthype.com that he is eyeing the best at 122 lb after he comes through the Martinez fight.

“I will get past Kiko Martinez, there’s no doubt in my mind, even if it is a tough fight. But I’m confident in what I’m going to do and I’m gonna go out there and do the job.”

Clearly a man with grand future plans, the Joe Gallagher-trained Quigg said;

“After Martinez I want the big fights. Obviously there’s Carl Frampton, there’s Leo Santa Cruz, there’s Nonito Donaire. They’re the fights I want but I need to go out on the 18th of July and put in the best performance of my career and make a bit of a statement.”

As far as big UK fights, Frampton v Quigg is second only to a fight between Kell Brook and Amir Khan, which we all know is seemingly never going to happen as long has Khan has air in his lungs – so fan interest in Frampton v Quigg isn’t going to die down anytime soon and Quigg is acutely aware of this.

Talking about his rival with refreshing candour, he said;

“I rate Carl Frampton – I’d be lying if I said I thought he were crap. My own belief is that I’ll beat him. Their team think he can beat me, I think that he believes he can beat me, but I guarantee you that when we meet I will be the winner.”

Also on the potential Frampton fight, Quigg said separately to Sky Sports;

“I’m confident that fight can be made and it’s the fight I’ll be going after next. He’s the number one I want to fight. It’s the biggest fight for me and the biggest for him. I want to prove I’m the best.”

“If the fight doesn’t come off then it’s through no fault of my own.”
