Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell has been matched tough in Swindon next month
Home-town hero Jamie Cox relaunches his career at the Oasis Leisure Centre on Saturday, June 15 and promoter PJ Rowson has put together a good-looking bill.
Blackwell will meet undefeated Stepan Horvath over six rounds after Prince Arron pulled out of a British-title eliminator ordered by the Board of Control to challenge for European honours.
Horvath is the Czech middleweight champion and extended his unbeaten record to 11 fights – three inside-the-distance – with a points win over Max Maxwell in Grays last month.
Blackwell is aiming to make it back-to-back wins since his loss to Billy-Joe Saunders for the British and Commonwealth belts last December – and the 22 year-old from Trowbridge has spent the last few weeks sparring Carl Froch.
Rowson reports that Blackwell has been “learning a lot” with the IBF super-middleweight champion and spelled out his plans for ‘Bang Bang.’
“We need to keep Nick boxing at a good level now,” explained Rowson, “and are looking for a big fight by the end of the year.
“We still want the British and Commonwealth titles, but if that doesn’t happen we will have to see what else is out there.”
In another good fight, local favourite Gareth Heard meets Faheem Khan in a make-or-break match-up between up-and-coming welterweights.
Heard, from nearby Bradford-on-Avon, has four wins in five fights and Khan is unbeaten in six outings (two draws).
Khan won kick-boxing honours before launching his pro career and Rowson hopes the Exeter southpaw’s clash with Heard will be for a belt.
Also on the bill, Bath middleweight Mike Rose aims to make it four wins out of four and former amateur star Jonjo Price and Trowbridge heavyweight Luke Martin are also in action.
