Dean Byrne reckons if there was any justice he would be fighting Kell Brook this month

Brook meets Carson Jones in a rematch on Saturday, June 29 – and Byrne is back in the ring six days later looking to build on a career-best performance.

He came in at just three days’ notice to box world rated Jones last December – and came desperately close to upsetting the hard-as-nails American.

The referee scored their give-and-take eight-round scrap a draw and the chatty Dubliner said: “I thought I did more than enough to beat Carson Jones.

“Everyone who saw the fight on Sky Sports said I was robbed and one thing is for sure, the punch stats don’t lie.

“Now he is coming back to fight Kell Brook and it should be me fighting Kell Brook.

“I didn’t get the recognition I deserved for that performance and now I’ve lost momentum.

“I’m at world level and just need a couple of fights to sharpen up, then I will be ready to go for Brook, Jones and Lee Purdy.”

Byrne boxes on the championship bill at the Camden Centre on Friday, July 5 after inking a deal with promoter Mickey Helliet.

“Mickey can see my potential and he knows a busy fighter is a happy fighter,” said the 28 year-old.
“I always fight with my heart on my sleeve, leave everything in the ring and there’s a lot to fight for now.”

Son Joey was born last month and father-of-two Byrne lives with his girlfriend near the Miguel’s gym in Brixton where he trains with Paul Dougboe.

“I owe my performance against Jones to him,” said Byrne.

Dougboe also trains son Isaac, who boxed in last year’s Olympics and won the ABAs, and Byrne’s previous trainers have impressive CVs as well !

As an amateur, Byrne represented Ireland and after boxing in Australia, Johnny Lewis invited him to turn professional Down Under.

Byrne jumped at the chance, won Australian honours, then relocated to the States to work with Freddie Roach.

“They both said I would be a world champion,” said Byrne, “and they can’t both be wrong. They are Hall-of-Fame trainers, they know what they are talking about !”

Ahmet Patterson and Phil Gill meet for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title in the top-of-the-bill fight at the Camden Centre and tickets are available from 07534-004677.
