Welborn Enjoys Gavin Sparring

Jason Welborn believes sparring with British Welterweight Champion, Frankie Gavin, will stand him in good stead as he prepares to top the bill of It’s-A-Bout-Boxing’s show ‘Salvation’ at the Institute, Digbeth, Birmingham on Saturday, 29th June.

The Rowley Regis scrapper fought Gavin for the British Title back in January and the pair have remained close since. With Gavin preparing to take on Denton Vassell next Friday, he called former foe Welborn and asked him to help him prepare for the fight.

The 27 year-old from Rowley Regis, who lost to Gavin despite a gutsy performance, is similar to Vassell in size, stature and style and was more than happy to help his fellow professional prepare.

“It’s been great,” Welborn told “Frankie gave me a call about a month ago and asked me to pop along to his gym and do some sparring. I was happy to help. At that stage, I didn’t have any plans to fight anytime soon myself but thought it would be good experience.

“After a couple of sparring sessions I felt that, if I was going to spar someone of Frankie’s calibre, I may as well prepare for a fight myself, so I agreed to step on to the Digbeth Show, which takes place next week.

“I’m feeling sharp and finished my sparring with Frankie yesterday. It went well and we’re both ready for our fights. He’s fighting next Friday and I’m in action 24 hours later, so it’s worked out perfectly.”

It’s-A-Bout-Boxing are also hosting Frankie Gavin’s aftershow party after the Salvation show.

Also on the Institute bill at the Institute is Coventry’s Troy ‘Terrifying’ James who takes on Andy Harris over 4 three-minute rounds.

Two prospects go head-to-head as Welshpool’s warren Sinden takes on Zimbabwe-born, Birmingham-based banger, Disney Huni.

Also in action is Northampton lightweight, Jamie Spence, who takes on ‘Gypsy Boy’ Billy Smith. The former Prizefighter contender, who has fought the likes of Lee Purdy and Derry Matthews, will be looking to build on his recent victory over Matt Seawright.

Prospects Michael Mooney and Ainsley Seivwright complete the card, taking on Oliver Rainbird and Pavels Senkovs respectively.

Tickets are priced at just £25 General, £50 Ringside and £75 VIP Ringside. They are by calling the Box Office on 0845 467 3930 or 07888 870 650.
