WBC Asian Boxing Council Title for Berridge v Matsumoto
By – Brendan George: New Zealand bad boy Robert “The Butcher” Berridge 19-1 (15 KO’s) is set to face Japan’s # 1 light heavyweight Shintaro Matsumoto 10-2 (8 KO’s ) at the ABA Stadium July 5 in Auckland.
The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds for the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Light Heavyweight Title. With both fighters boasting a high percentage of knockouts on their record, this fight promises to be an explosive affair and could easily end early.
Promoter of the event Vasco Kovacevic had the following to say: “I’m excited about bringing this great fight to New Zealand. Japan’s Top Light Heavyweight vs New Zealand’s Top Light Heavyweight – it’s going to be a great fight that the fans won’t forget quickly.”
I also managed to catch up with Robert Berridge, who kindly took time out of his training schedule to answer a few questions.
BG: You have been compiling quite a few stoppage wins on your record lately. What knockout stands out for you as your best win?
RB: Without doubt the Serge Yannick KO. Serge had a world ranking and some pretty impressive victories of his own so stopping him was something special.
BG: Your style of coming forward and mixing it up is very fan friendly. Without giving too much away, what things are you working on for your next fight?
RB: My coach and trainer are getting me to do all sorts of technical drills, however I’m just thinking of knocking my opponent out!
BG: What do you know about your opponent?
RB: Nothing really. I leave that up to my management and trainers to select opponents and set a game plan.
BG: How has your preparation gone for this fight?
RB: It’s been perfect. As always, Vasco Kovacevic and Cleve Langdon have me in great shape and we also have Australian Olympian Damien Hooper helping out in camp as well.
BG: What fighters do you aspire to be like or model your style on?
RB: You can’t go past Mike Tyson and his aggressive attitude in the ring. In his prime he was relentless. But because I’m a southpaw, Marvin Haggler is my favourite fighter.
BG: Thanks Robert for talking to me and all the best for your upcoming fight.
RB: Thanks Brendan. I would just like to thank my sponsors Redline Fitness and send a message to New Zealand fight fans to come down to the venue Friday night and come see some great fights including Australian Olympian Damien Hooper.
