Michel Mothmora Makes First WBF Title Defense May 16

Journeyman-turned-champion Michel Mothmora from France will defend his World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Middleweight title on Friday May 16 in Saint Jean, only a few kilometers from his hometown of Gien, against Georgian Robison Omsarashvili.

Mothmora, 25-22 (8), went 15-21 before turning his career around, and has since won ten of his last eleven bouts. Last November he won the WBF title by defeating undefeated Czech Stepan Horvath (11-0) by split decision, and stayed busy with a non-title victory over compatriot Laurent Ferra in December.

Robison Omsarashvili, 14-6-3 (7), will be entering his second WBF title fight. In December of last year he gave Intercontinental champion Gogi Knezevic all he could handle, before losing by disqualification in round nine of a fight that was almost even on the scorecards.

Since the Knezevic bout, the 25-year-old has returned with a victory over fellow countryman Levan Megrelishvili, and he feels the Mothmora fight is his big opportunity to advance his career:

“I made some mistakes against Knezevic that cost me the chance to win, and bring the title back to Georgia. It would have been a big thing for boxing in my country, so now I will do everything to get it right this time, win the WBF title and make my country proud”, said Omsarashvili.

“I am still young, but I don’t think I will get many more opportunities as big as this one, so I have to make the most of it. Mothmora has lost before, quite a few times, so even though he has had a lot of success recently he can be beaten, and I am confident I can beat him.”

Mothmora, 33 years old and a pro since 2000, is aware that he has a stern challenge on his hands in this his first title-defense, but he too believes he will prevail on May 16:

“I am a champion now, and my whole mindset has changed. I am a winner, not a journeyman anymore, and I worked hard to win this title. I came this far by always believing in my dreams, and I am going to beat Omsarashvili and keep the title in France.”

The Michel Mothmora vs. Robison Omsarashvili WBF International Middleweight title fight will be promoted by Michel Chagnoux and Ring Giennois.
