Mastrodouka vs. Munoz For Unified World Super Featherweight Title

Professional boxing shows are few and far between in Greece, and world championship fights even more so, but on Saturday May 9 in Athens, Areti Mastrodouka will vie for the vacant Unified Womens World Super Featherweight title against Spaniard Loli Munoz.

The fight, which will also be promoted by Mastrodouka in association with Stylianos Politis, is the second Unified Womens World Title fight after the WBF launched its cooperation with the WIBF and GBU in March, and merged the three championships into the most prestigious title in female boxing.

Known as “The Master”, 39-year-old Mastrodouka, 8-0 (2), was a very accomplished amateur, winning silver at the 2002 world championships and bronze at the European championships a year later. However, she didn’t turn professional until March 2012, after setting up base in the United Kingdom, where she had her first six paid bouts.

In March 2014 she returned to Greece and won a clear decision over Slovakian Claudia Ferenczi, in what was a warm-up for a much bigger fight in Athens seven months later where she won the GBU World Lightweight title by defeating Hana Horakova from the Czech Republic.

Loli “Sugar” Munoz, 12-14-3 (7), is one of the most experienced campaigners currently on the scene, and has fought at world class level the last ten years. While her modest record is deceiving, she has come up short in four previous world title bouts, but has always been competitive against the very top names.

A true road-warrior, Munoz has been in with much superior opposition, and previously boxed in her opponents country thirteen times. That fact, along with a draw against future European champion Nicole Boss and a victory over current WBC World champion Mikaela Lauren in 2012, makes her confident of victory against Mastrodouka.
