Lightweight hopeful, Kendo Castaneda, fights on December 21st

Just four days before Christmas, two time world champion Jesse James Leija’s hard punching Lightweight sensation, Kendo Castaneda, will step in the ring once again and attempt to give the fight fans an early holiday gift at Leija-Battah Promotions’ “River City Rumble”.

The highly anticipated event will take place at the historic La Villita Assembly Hall in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, December 21st.

The soon to be 19 year old fighter is excited for the opportunity to follow up his memorable professional debut, which transpired on October 27th at the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum.

Although the hard cracking pugilist closed the show in style by flooring his opponent in the closing seconds of a genuine four round thriller, Kendo Castaneda was pushed to the brink by young Austinite Albert Romero.

The San Antonio favorite claims that his experience in October will pay dividends next Friday at La Villita.

“I learned a lot from my first fight as a professional,” states Kendo Castaneda. “Being a prizefighter is much different than fighting as an amateur. You can feel every punch with the 8 ounce gloves and no headgear. But I love to compete and I love the fight game. It was a surprisingly tough fight, but I worked through it and almost got my opponent out of there in the final round.”

“If the fourth round lasted another minute, I would have knocked my opponent out.”

While the fight fans in attendance were delighted to see such an entertaining scrap, one man at ringside wasn’t so elated.

“After the third round of that fight, my trainer, James Leija, let me have it. He asked me why I was fighting my opponent’s fight and not using my jab or my footwork from a distance. So I went into the final round and set up my shots by using feints, using my jab, and I put him on the canvas at the final bell. I was able to seal the victory with a great shot that landed right on the chin.”

One of Jesse James Leija’s greatest gifts as a professional fighter was making the appropriate adjustments in the ring to pull out the hard earned victory.

In his championship winning effort against Hall of Fame legend Azumah Nelson in 1994, Leija fought a very disciplined fight in which he didn’t allow the great Ghanaian puncher to dictate the pace of the historic title fight. Jesse James fought through great adversity against a tough and rugged opponent to fulfill his dream of becoming a boxing world champion.

The former WBC Super Featherweight title holder sees the same championship qualities in Kendo Castaneda.

“Kendo is special fighter who has all of the qualities to be great,” admits James Leija. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get to the championship level, but he has that potential. If he continues to improve and make the sacrifices necessary to be the best fighter he can be, than I can eventually see him becoming a world champion in boxing.”

Castaneda feels fortunate to be fighting under the tutelage of Jesse James Leija.

“Leija knows what it takes to reach the highest level of boxing,” acknowledges the young Alamo City fighter. “Because I got a little too anxious in my last fight, James has been emphasizing the importance of staying calm and focused in the ring.”

“He tells me that it’s the easiest way to get tired in the early rounds of the fight if you’re not able to stay calm. That’s when you start to make mistakes in the ring. It’s hard to think clearly when you get tired in the ring, and you have to stay focused when you’re standing in front of a fighter who wants to knock you out.”

Although the talented young Lightweight intends to fight a much smarter tactical fight throughout his second professional bout, Kendo Castaneda promises not to change the entertainment value of his performance on December 21st.

“I’ve been working hard for this fight on December 21st, at La Villita. The fight fans are going to see the best version of Kendo Castaneda in the ring and I promise to put on a great show.”
