Golovkin picks Sturm over Geale; sees Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez as toss up

VERONA, NY (September 1, 2012) After making weight on Friday afternoon, one day ahead of his world title clash with Grzegorz Proksa, World Boxing Association (WBA) Middleweight World Champion Gennady Golovkin spoke about the other upcoming high-profile middleweight bouts taking place in September.

Just prior to the Golovkin/Proksa bout, WBA “Super” Middleweight World Champion Felix Sturm will battle IBF Middleweight Champion Daniel Geale in Oberhausen, Germany. Then on September 15th, WBC Middleweight Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will defend his title against Sergio Martinez in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Said Golovkin, “I see the Sturm/Geale fight as a very solid fight with Sturm winning a close decision. I think Sturm has a better jab and will be able to box to a victory.”

“For the fight on September 15th between Chavez Jr. and Martinez, I think it’s a 50/50 fight. Sergio has better skills but Chavez Jr. is younger and seems to be getting stronger with each fight.”

“After my fight on Saturday I’ll watch the tape of Sturm/Geale and then on September 15th I look forward to viewing the Chavez Jr./Martinez fight.”

The Golovkin/Proksa clash takes place LIVE on HBO”s Boxing After Dark from the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY, 9:45ET/PT.
